options for DIS ignition on LT1

I have been thinking of a way to build your own DIS ignition system similar to Delteq's system.

Does anyone know exactly how the PCM communicats timing and dwell control to the ignition module??

Could a gm 4 coil module like those on northstars be hooked up with an external trigger wheel ?

I have run fords EDIS 8 wasted spark DIS on my vortec 8.1 and 6.0L engines with the Megasquirt fuel/ignition control, Maybe a way to change the signal the LT1 computer sends to the ignition module, then modify the signal, send it to the EDIS module.

the parts for EDIS 8 ignition can be found in junkyards for under $100.00

I want to do this to my lt1, any input ? ideas? anyone else ever thought of finding a solution to the opti other then the high price on the delteq?

a few sites i've been reading on...

I would love it if someone would do a writeup on putting the Ford EDIS system on an otherwise stock LT1. Supposedly it can be done using the stock PCM, I am trying to find an affordable way to move the high voltage out of the opti and go with the individual coils.

There was a guy from (I think) NEDyno, who was working on an LT1 with an EDIS, using a magnet in the cam sprocket and a sensor tapped into the timing cover. Claimed great things for it, but I don't think they ever got it running well. Try a "Search"... the system was discussed here on and off for about a year..... maybe 3 or 4 years ago.

There are two very popular ways to take the high voltage out of the Opti... the Delteq (Northstar, waste spark) and the Bailey LTCC (8 LS1-style coils). Both of those systems have been running for about 4 or 5 years. I took the high voltage out using an aftermarket ECU, an 8-channel ignition driver and 8 LS1-style coils, 7 years ago. I copied it from a buddy of mine, who had done it two years before that. All of the aforementioned systems use only the optical sensor data stream, not the high voltage section of the Opti. Its an extremely accurate cam position sensor.

There was also a multi-page thread on this forum about 3 or 4 years ago, covering the alternatives to the Opti.

"Search" is your friend.

thanks, I have read them all. LTCC seemed like the way to go, I just stumbled upon the ford system but I guess it has been discussed. Only reason I would prefer the ford system is if the car broke down somewhere nobody is going to have an LTCC module on the shelf but factory parts should be attainable. Has anyone done any long term testing or any idea how long the LTCC module is good for?

I tried to search for the NEDyno EDIS thread, but it appears to be gone. It went back to about 2002. Here are a couple of "Opti alternative" threads, also dating back many years:

Fred,

Have you confirmed that the optical portion sends reliable inputs to the ECU at 7000RPM. There's got to be a limit to the opti electronics at some point.

Yes... I can personnaly attest to the fact that the Opti sends a reliable signal up to at least 8,000rpm. I've seen that on my own engine (not on purpose), and G. Baxter routinely ran his 1,125HP blown LT1 to 8,000rpm, using the Opti signals as the reference signal to his MoTeC ECU. The limitation on the LT1 is the tables in the PCM.... they only go to 7,000rpm. The engine should continue to run past that point. And there are people who have used the stock PCM on engines that rev well past 7,000rpm. I beleive Rick Abare is one of those people.

I believe that was on Marc's Camaro. Also, didn't that car have an SEFI8LO in it?

EDIS with a crank trigger works fine so far...

Looks like you have done a similar setup, any reason you don't want to do the same thing again?

jsetzer, you should do a how-to post with some pics, it would be great to see how you pulled it off.
