Need information on stock harmonic damper balancing
Need information on stock harmonic damper balancing
I need to know if my stock harmonic damper on my stock crank can go on in any position or if there is a specific way it has to go on. I pulled it off to remove an under-drive pulley (in preparation for a blower install) and did not mark the position it came off in.
There seems to be conflicting views:
Taken from an LT1 Tech thread:
The LT1 is unusual as it is both internally and externally balanced. Some people have weighted balancers and some don't.
Look in the holes around the outer edge.. if none have weights in em it can go on any way... if So put it on where it came off
Taken from an Advanced Tech thread:
I just went through this with Callies when I ordered my crank. The front harmonic damper is neautral balanced (internal), and the flywheel in counter balanced (external).
My stock damper has a weight in one of the holes. Does this mean it has to go on in a specific position? If so, how can I tell which way to put it back on???
Thanks!
Brent M.

Found the answer.
The damper holes only line up in 1 of the 3 possible positions. Since I did not remove the hub, this is not an issue.
However, the fact that the hub is not keyed and can be installed in any position really makes a person think that the damper is not balanced to the crank.
