There is a computer program which helps out.... or you can do it in you're head. There is a book called Auto Math which has it in there. If you want, let me know and I'll see if I can email you the program... it is small. about 1 meg...

This is the equation I put together in Excel:

DC = (((Stroke - (Stroke / 2 - Stroke / 2 * COS(IVC * 3.14159 / 180))) * 3.14159 / 4 * Bore^2 * 2.54^3) + CompVol) / CompVol

CompVol = Chamber volume + piston dish volume + gasket thickness volume + deck height volume (all in cc's)

IVC = Intake valve close timing at .006" = (Advertised duration / 2) + LSA - Advance - 180

Remember, solve within parenthesis first, exponents second, multiplication/division third, then addition/subtraction fourth. The equation won't work otherwise.

Using these numbers on my former 383 with 11.25/1 compression and a Crane 296/304 hydraulic roller (234/242 on a 112, +6 adv.), I get a DC of 7.5/1. From experience, this motor ran on 93 octane, but wouldn't tolerate more than 36 - 37 degrees total timing. It made very strong midrange power and ran 11.09 at 122.7 mph.

Great stuff Mike! With that set up, is there any chance to pass smog?

I kinda' doubt it. The cam had a pretty lumpy idle.

Here in Louisiana, we don't have smog tests, so I don't know.
