Help me with my Duramax

I really don’t know where to post this, so if the mods want to move it that’s fine with me. I have been buying GM cars and trucks my entire life and most of them brand new in the last 6 years. I have had very good luck with them all except for this last one I purchased. It’s a 2005 Chevy 2500HD Duramax Allison. I have had this truck back to the dealer 6 times for the same problem If I come to a stop and then take off the truck will only go 25 – 40 MPH and has very poor throttle response and if you floor it is just chugs. The last attempted fix was a new fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator, the truck was a the dealer for 2 weeks while they gave me a very dirty and striped down Saturn Ion to drive. This was in June. I called the GM 1 -800 number and they were no help at all, they just kept telling me they wanted to make me happy but did nothing nor did they offer to do anything to make me happy. Well a few months later now the problem is back again. The dealer told me when I picked it up last time they didn’t know what was wrong with it and just hoped it was fixed. Like I said above this truck has been in 6 times for the same problem and has gone only 4 months that it was trouble free as the longest period between dealer visits. This is my wife’s truck that she and my newborn drive every day and she has lost total faith in this truck.
What are my options? Will GM buy this truck back because they can’t seem to fix it? How and who do I need to talk to? Can or does GM ever offer extended factory bumper to bumper warrantees in cases like this?

I am just fed up with all of the driving to the dealer and taking time out of my life for them to only tell me that they don’t know what’s wrong with it.

Any advice or people to call would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Roger Romain

Screw them, take it to someone knew. My parents went around with a very bad Dodge dealer in town, 7 times for the same cruise control problem. They never did fix it. I finally convinced them to take it to another Dodge deal in town and they fixed it on the first try.

Talk to other people who have diesels, if you know any, and see if they have had good experiences with any other Chevy dealers. You may have to drive a but, but a dealer with good techs are worth it.

Absolutely. A place that sells a lot of HD trucks would be a good starting point.

This is the largest Chevrolet dealer in the area Martin Chevrolet and they sell tons of these trucks. The only place I would find a another dealer maybe more equiped would be Detroit.

Does it only happen after you come to a complete stop? It almost sounds like an injector is either stuck open or clogged shut, which is a common problem with the first duramax motors. Miles and time will tell how well the newer ones due on injectors too. Which motor do you have btw? (Look at the 8th number of the vin) With the D or 1, can't remember right now, it's a royal pain in the **** to change the injectors because you have to tear it down and pull the valve covers just to get to the injectors. (It equal a full day and a half job that only pays about 6 hrs under warranty) It seems that the techician attempted the easy fix with the regulator and fuel rail (which only takes about 3-4hrs tops to do) Also how many miles are on it?

I may be able to offer some advice on what's wrong as I work for a Chevy Dealership and have been apprenticing under a diesel tech (best one in Orlando area) for the last year. Tomorrow when I get to work I'll check for any bullitens for your problem or any possible fixes.

The truck is a 2005 and has only 25,000 miles on it currently and had under 20,000 when this all started.

Thanks for any help.

Finally after 2 weeks I got my truck back. The dealer worked with a fuel injection specialist from Arizona and they put a fuel pressure sensor of some sort in it. The truck still isnt the same truck that it was when we first got it. It still doesnt seem to have the power it once had. I had also been talking to the GM customer service people and after my last conversation with him he advised me that the fix was just and educated guess and that if I have further problems I should seek legal advice. And not bother with a dealer again. Whatever that means.

I guess these truck are just to complicated for most dealers to service. Its really to bad because GM builds a really nice truck.

Lemon law for an 05? think you are a little too late for that. I'm also surprised they brought in a 'specialist' from Arizona. The fuel system is Bosch and there is a large Bosch contingent in Michigan.

How many miles were on it before you started having problems? Have you changed the fuel filter at all? (if you haven't, change it before you go any further) This really shouldn't be hard for someone with a tech 2 to figure out. First what needs to be checked is proper working of the fuel pressure sensor on the rail. If that is found to be working the next is to check the Tech 2 for requested fuel pressure vs. actual fuel pressure. Check it for various rpms. If the actual is different than the requested you have a problem elsewhere. It could be that the pressure relief valve is shot and is dumping fuel and won't hold pressure. It could be in the fuel pump if the MPROP (fuel pressure regulator) is outta wack. It is a valve that changes opening to the high pressure pump depending on how much fuel is needed. It could be that the fuel filter is simply clogged. There could be an air leak somewhere in the fuel system that is causing it to draw air.

There are many places things can go wrong, but someone that knows the system and has the appropriate equipment should be able to figure it out quickly.

The truck had 17k on it when we had the first engine problem and has been back 9 times from then until now with 26k on it. They have had the truck a total of 45 days of service and of course say that they have exhausted every test the the GM tech help people have sugested.

These are the parts that they have replaced so far and they have done a ton of ECM recals.

Fuel rail pressure sensor part # 97361561
o-ring and intake gaskets part # 97303655
97303656
97729991
97306568
97318478
Replace fuel pressure Reg.part# 97369850
Replaced VSS on T-case 12376520

I dont know if those are part #s or not it says FP number on the paperwork that I have.

The truck always has the same things that it does. No power, surging, rough idle and the engine goes into a limp mode that shuts it off at just under 2000 RPM

The fuel filter has been changed every 10k so twice now.

We alway fill it up at the local Sunocol the alot of truckers use so I am sure the fuel is fresh.

dont be. in the year and a half i have worked for ford i have had a "field service engineer" or "specialist" fly out from detroit and california to help me with a problematic vehicle.

both times he could not figure it out either and ford bought both of the cars back.

start by going to the dealership and telling them straight out you do not want this vehicle any longer and you want it bought back, explain to them that you are not willing to take no for an answer. also call gm again and tell them the same thing, if that does not work get a lawyer the car is under warranty and they can not fix it.
