Great oil pump info, and ...... notice he makes a point about not needing a HV pump.

So do I still port my aftermarket oil pump on my 2000 Z? It isn't necessary right?

After reading this, I think I am going to do some cleanup on my pump...

I am going to take a good look at mine on the next rebuild. Very interesting. As far as the design of the aftermarket units, I must say I never know to look for what he describes but I suspect they are like the stockers.

that was an old smokey & duntov trick from back in the day. they also ran passage from one side to the other but i have no pics. beware on some of the newer melling pumps because they are thinner and break in hp motors. there is some info on the web about this.
some of the exotic pumps have this done already.

Thanks for the link. I had heard of this many years ago, but never saw pics.

I did all that on my pump along with deburing everything, and also ported the passageway into the block and the main cap. All that stuff pays off, and thats how to put an engine together - not just assembling the parts.

Although I've never ported my oil pump, I don't even use a HV pump in my BBC. It has a tendency to suck the pan dry at high rpms if you don't have good return back to the pan.

Once again some useful info. I need to finalize my build and I'm undecided on what oil pump to run in the new stroker?

I've considered just running a BBC oil pump. If I go that route and do a cleanup like that article do you see any problems?

Looks pretty much like what my engine builder did when they bought me a new stock pump and "blueprinted" it.

BB pump is WAY to much volume for a SBC. Just wasted hp to push all that oil around. Blueprinted stocker with high pressure spring is my idea of the right way to go.

Thumbs up

Totally agree.

Just finished my 396 build up (still chasing down a few odds and ends actually), but I am REALLY glad I didn't go any higher volume than I did.

396, ~500fwhp, 7000 redline (~6500 shift)
pump: Melling Select 10552 (stock + 10% volume)
block/cap: ported for reduced flow restriction.
pump: slightly ported to knock off edges (not quite as much as in rich's link though)
pan: Canton (7 quart I belive).
pickup: Canton (welded and bolted to tube and pump... height checked of course).

Even with all the attention to reduced restriction she idles a little over 40psi cold, and a bit under 40psi warm. Anything over ~2500rpms drives the pressure near 80psi. Over 4000 it's pegged.

a lower pressure spring would be useful for me, but screw that.. I ain't pullin her out now.
