Front main cap question

I accidentally tossed the front main cap in the file13 when i got my new block (getting splayed caps). Is it a problem using a cap from another block, used whatever? Will obviously be getting a line hone anyway.

And if its no biggie, any of you engine builders have an extra LT1 front cap layin around?

Your best bet is to get an aftermarket billet one like the 3 middle ones.

The rear cap is pretty dam stong in stock condition and the front is a week point especially in a blown motor.

For $70 it's a good addition to the motor anyways.

It may cost you a few extra $ to get the front cap fitted to your block (usually under 1/2 hr labor charge worst case), but otherwise you should be fine.

I like that idea, but wasnt 100% sure the front was the same as the middle three.

One other question, well two, are all SBCs stepped like LT1s? and will ARP main studs cover the rear cap?

Nah a front cap is usually a 2 bolt cap.

The studs will still work on all the mains.

I mean how the face of the cap is stepped down as it gets close to the bearing. How like an inch out from the bearing it is ~1/16" lower.

Yeah as Lonnie said that just takes a little work to fit in there correctly. It fits ALMOST exactly in the same place

Gotchya, didnt think LT1s were specific there. Thanks fellas, will probably be ordering a billet one, might be overkill for mostly NA, but ohwell.

One other point: the rear steel caps are very expensive.

Yep Rich is right again!

About 4 times as much as the front one, or about the same price as the front 4 caps together!

Thumbs up

It won't be cheap you have to bore the new front cap to size and then line hone the block. More like 200.00 labor probably.

Its getting all new billet splayed center caps, so that will need to be done no matter what.
