Imagine a 389 Pontiac V8. Cut off the left (driver's side) cylinders, put in a flat crank with only 4 rod throws, change the cam lobe orientation, and make 1/2 of an intake manifold. Use either a 1 bbl carb or a Rochester 4 bbl. Everything else is pretty much 389 V8. That was the slant 4 Tempest engine. Mine was a '62 4 bbl. manual. It's still one of the largest 4s put in passenger cars.

It looks like a midget engine. They use the driver's side bank for circle track weight distribution purposes. Pontiac used the other bank for exhaust and steering packaging purposes.
