egr air valves

ok i know the purpose of the egr is to recyle exhaust fumes and reburn them for cleaner emissions. will getting rid of these fittings the egr and air reduce or increase my gas mileage and or hp. i'm goin to be putting in headers and what to know how they will affect driveablilty. please be as throughough as possible.

Re: egr air valves

Actually, the EGR is used to cool the combustion chamber temperatures by displacing oxygen with inert exhaust gasses (they've already been "burned".... there's not much left to "reburn") . That reduces the formation of oxides of nitrogen (NOx). EGR is only recirculated at low/moderate loads, and only under conditions that would cause high combustion temps.... e.g. - lugging the engine at low RPM in too high a gear. Never operates at WOT. A side benefit of this is reduced chances of detonation. And, in some respects, its similar to reducing the displacement of the engine, and should help fuel economy a small bit - not sure you could even measure it. You will never notice that it has been deleted, as far as "operability". You will notice that the SES light is on, unless you have it deleted fromo the PCM, or use a workaround to fool the PCM into thinking the MAP value changes correctly when it cylcles the EGR system.

Deleting AIR will not affect driveability, performance or fuel mileage in any way. It only runs for a couple minutes at startup to help the cats heat up faster, reducing emissions during engine warm up. With your OBD-II 96, you will also get an SES for this system, unless you have it programmed out as well.
