Drilling for distributor

There is a place called lt1intakes.com he charges $100 to do it which is not bad. The rest of you that put the distributor in the rear of the motor where did you get your work done?

I know this is not really advanced tech but I never get responces to these questions in LT1 tech.

Thanks

I sent an intake to get done by LT1intakes.com, I really didn't like the fit and finish, it seem to be a bit too far to the right and the distributor was rubbing the side of the intake. So I went out and bought a LT4 carb intake and located the hole on a brigeport and made the hole myself. I had to get the back of the intake welded to add some material for the correct distributor height and angle.

I have pics of the intakes http://www.96z28ss.cz28.com/photo3.html

I'm actually doing an intake for someone else I'll take more pics to show what it actually looks likes as its getting done.

Yeah I was thinking of sending it to LT1 intakes.com as well. You dont think the quality was that great though....Maybe I will see if someone around here can do it. It looks like it took a lot of machine work to do though?

thats a good one!

I called up Hogan today. I think im going to send the intake to them and get it machined. Then I will probably go with a msd adjustable coller to avoid steping the back of the intake as 96z28ss did.

Any idea if this is possible to do to a 5.3 liter Ls1? Don't know that much about those motors but I don't think they have a dizzy and I want to run a carb on one...
Thanks!

The ones I've seen done involved quite a bit of milling and welding to get it right. Expect to pay a lot more than $100.

Edelbrock has a dual plane LS1 carb intake and GMPP showed a single-plane at PRI in Dec. 03. It may be available by now. I really liked the GM single-plane.

Yeah you can send the intake to Hogan and have them machine the intake. They do a good job You will have to send them the distributor and the intake together so they can use it to make sure they clearance the back of the intake for the body of the distributor. Each distributor is alittle different.

Just to make sure I'm not missing anything here, if for say I was to pick up a Ls1 motor, prolly would be a 5.3 bc of cost - can I just get one of these intakes and pop a dizzy and carb in there and forget using the ECU all together and run it like any old school carb setup or is there more to it? That would really simplify things for me!

The idea is to put one in my 68 Chevy Stepside for as cheap as possible.

Thanks for any help.

You can't use a distributor on the LS1.
They do make a carb intake but it comes with a ignition box to make the coils work. there is no gear on a LS1 cam shaft to turn a distributor.

I have some pics of a LT4 intake we converted for a customer, shoot me an e-mail and I can send you out the picture. Getting the hole in the right spot does take some time and work, a little bit more work than $100 though, closer to $150.

That's a real nice setup! I'm guessing your not using the stock PCM correct?

How much material did you cut off the EGR? Did you do it to both ports?
