I had a '69 Dodge Charger Hemi. It was stock except for the mufflers. There in no way in hell it had anywhere near 800hp. It would trap in the mid 100's. Even at 3,900lbs, that is still in the low 400's for hp. It would have gone 30mph faster with 800hp. No way, no how. I doubt that a fully prepped 426 Hemi would make 800hp on pump gas. Those things want lots of compression to make hp. That "test" is pure, unadulterated bull excrement.

It's as bad as reading those $2000 budget build ups making 800 hp. Then reading where they happen to have a set of Brodix heads with Jesel rockers just sitting on the shelf, someone donates a big blower etc.

Out of all the magazines, I still think Car Craft stays closer to real world stuff. Most TV shows are full of weird and exotic stuff far out of reach for the average person. They show what can be done but never really show everything that's required to do it. I hate trying to explain to people who want a 500+hp street engine that the entire drivetrain needs to be modified to handle all that power.

How about those 1000 hp imports? Maybe there are a few of them but they'll cost about 3 times as much as building a big V8 car and everyone seems to think they can do the same thing with a few bolt ons.

I almost owned a 68 hemi Road Runner back in the early 80's. I didn't have the $10,000 asking price. Car was mint when I saw it up on a hoist getting a new exhaust installed.

The guy who provided the Hemi engine ran his mouth on another board about how much power that this engine made, and how radically modified it really was (it was a good bit bigger than 426"). This show originally aired like over a year ago - I thought this had been posted here before?

they do have pump gas motors that make over 700 horsepower. the time and effort in r&d is astronomical. that was not a stock hemi. they were underated but made a very clean 500hp with tuning and tricks. as far as a low 10 second stock car it was not done. jenkins set world records with a 66 nova 327 that was in the 12's. most factory race cars ran 11's and 12's back in the day.
check out the nostalgia super stockers for some serious 9 and 10 second rides..
also check out the engine masters challenge. that is serious pump gas power

Yeah I saw that on Speed too and was like darn I must be building the wrong stuff? That Hemi is probably 500+inches, roller cam, 12.1 compression etc...

at this point.. id seriously like to know this:

a stock 800+ hp is obviously b.s, we all agree on that, heres what impresses me- how the hell do you get 800+hp out of a stock looking hemi.. now thats impressive.

for those of you that are familiar, he should drop that in a dart and enter the "factory appearing drags" where anything is allowed that cannot be visually seen. it must look 100% stock. the current leader has a stingray with a 427 running an 11 sec quarter. if this elephant made more then 800hp he should take that no problem,..
