Belt drive options for cam?
Belt drive options for cam?
Just wondering what people think about the Comp belt drive kit for a SBC. I've found Mallory units, and of course Jesel, as options too. Which is the best for the bucks? And this would be mated with a belt drive distributor also. MSD, Mallory, and Jesel again for options. Any others I'm not finding that are better?
Thanks.
PS - For a standard cam location 9.025 block in either Little M or Motown.

The way I see it, Bryce wants to delete the rear dist. and mount it up front via belt drive. Kinda limits you to a belt drive timing system.
That said, I'd go with Jesel. Everything works with the Jesel system. Who knows what kind of modifications would be necessary to make say a MSD distributor work with the Comp Cams belt drive?
Maybe CC's tech service could help you answer those questions but I like the security in knowing I can buy the Jesel system, both timing and dist setup designed to work together, and just bolt it on.
My personal experience is based around the Jesel so I may be a little biased but those are the reasons I'd go Jesel.

Re: Belt drive options for cam?
Thanks MG. I'm looking at both a belt-cam drive and belt-distributor drive. I guess I wasn't too clear on that before. I haven't done much phoning around yet, but that's exactly what I was wondering (what parts work with which other manufacturer's stuff). I want to get away from a rear mount distributor so I can at least remove my intake to check lifters, remove heads.....you know, the usual crap. With the motor still in the car that is. I've seen a complete Mallory set-up before that works good, too. Just need more info than a sales pitch from the manufacturers. Thanks.

Re: Belt drive options for cam?
If it is a trailer queen a belt set up is wonderful. If not then there is no way to keep dirt and dust out of it. I have found the CC's unit to wear the cog's on the pulley's quickly in a high dirt or dust enviorment. It rounds the corner's of the belt and cog's to the point of slipping and that ain't good for the cam or distributor. I don't know about the other brands. You could use the wet set for the cam but I have not heard of a dist drive for a wet belt cam drive.
Re: Belt drive options for cam?
Yep, accessibility is everything on a race car and Chevrolets need as much help as they can get. Not only that, but if it's a track only car (aka "trailer queen" by some) there's a good deal of quick tunability with the belt drive.
Just make sure you ckeck your rod-cam clearance with the valvetrain setup as you intend to run it. Clearances will change (static to loaded) due to belt stretch.
Good luck.
