Arao High Port Heads
Went to the track, Joe shut it off in third but ran 6.09 in the 1/8m at 116mph, still went 9.95 in the 1/4 coasting through the traps. Wish I had a car weighing <3,400lbs with driver. So, I'm all better now.
Kmook: I say go for it if the cash is there. Sounds like a great project if you are patient. Sorry for the long winded dissertation, a little speed was better than a nap or a Prozac

Well, I'll make my take vocal on this but Ken you've already heard it. I've always been about being different. Even when I started this hobby it was about setting yourself apart from the rest. Some people don't care, some do. I happen to be one that does. Why? Because this hobby is too frickin' expensive to just be another name in the pot. Be different...make an impact...be known....for me, it makes the money spent feel like it was at least somewhat worth it cause we all know the ratio of return on investment is non-existent.
With that said, if you can get Russ to actually come through I think this would be one of the baddest street motors to date. I'm not a big fan of the SB2.2 talk because of the actual purpose rpm of the heads. When its all said and done, its going to be expensive no matter which route you choose so the consideration of either buildup lets us know cost isn't the deciding factor.
It basically boils down to what drives you....

Ok, how many people's advice did I get on whether or not I should go through with my plans Ken?
You got it... zero, zilch not a one. Cause I already knew what they'd say and my Mind was already made up. I'm not looking back at this point and neither will you...... unless your bank account dries up.
Wanna be like the supercharge boys making alot of power, just build one of those. Wanna be quick n/a then you're gonna need something "special". It won't be ordinary but who wants a cookie-cutter-mobile?
If it were me and I wanted to win the King Pimp award I'd get rid of the block, go 4.125"+ bore tall deck block (4 - 4.125 stroke) and put a set of sb2.2's or Pro Action 14's on there. That big of a displacement can make tons of hp and torque with a huge small block head and it'll never need to see the other side of 7.5k to do it. Hey, don't we have a guy round here who did something just like this????

Hehehehe
I say if you can actually get a set go for it! I am going to cheap out on the heads and go with a set of 18* heads and sheet metal intake. Custom headers will be made.
I say cheap because it appears I will be less then 2K in the heads! That includes the LT1 convertion.
Now the block and final displacement is still in the air
I HAVE every thing for a LT 383...but that may get shelved.
All I want to do is beat LS1/6 cars and Ferrari's
Let us know how you come out man!

In one thread we discussed these heads and it was mentioned that you can use these sb2.2 heads with a decent size bore and displacement and with the appropriate cam, a non wild one, and you would not have to scream the block past 7000 rpm! Mostly because they flowed so well.
So what's the real story with the SB2.2 heads?
Alan/Bobby- Thanks for the insperation it always helps
As far as i can tell, when considering the sb2.2s on a lt1 block (396ci or under) you will be looking at reving quite high. But like Mindgame mentioned if you go with a block that can accept a large bore/stroke and get say 427+ci then you could have those heads and a usable rpm range.

OK, this is the part that everyone seems to be contraindicating here.

Rob,
I know the thread you're thinking about, and the "mentioning" of not needing to be zinged way up in the rpm range was sort of worded funny. I had to read it a couple times myself, I believe it was Mindgame, but what he was saying was in a larger 427/434ci Gen1 Motor, there would be no need to really turn the motor the >8k rpms.
I still contend the SB2.2 or any other head with ports this large GM/Brodix Canted Valves, Pro Action 14*, etc, would require too much rpm in an LT1 based block. Given the inherent block's inabilty for a larger bore/cubes, wall distortion, instability/Crank walk, etc etc, I just don't see it being a good combination. No one seems to want to listen to me on this, but not my problem. I'll stick to my 360+cfm 245cc heads I have on my LT1 block, as 8k rpm is the most I feel comfortable with.

Kurtis,
I'm reading ya loud and clear man.
I believe I may have been the one who mentioned using them on a smaller bore stroker and making streetable revs. This has been talked about quite a bit so I'm sure some of it got lost in the chit chat but my intentions were to have the heads welded and the ports worked to more "streetable" volume. I went through the same deal with the 15 degree heads I'm using now.
So in answer to your question Rob.... yes, these heads would make some real power providing they were 1) virgin castings worked to a smaller port size or 2) a welded/reported head. A strong 383/396 with the intent of making as much power as possible by 7000-7500 would be right at home with a ~240 cc port. Then you'd just need enough cam to feed the engine to that rpm. A 245-250 @.050 solid roller cam is plenty to do that with enough head on the motor and in my opinion (I think I'm in the minority here) that's a "streetable" cam with good tuning and the right car setup.
And yeah, the 4 valvers are gonna have plenty of rev potential too. I don't remember the port volumes for those puppies but they aint exactly small fries.

I say "ever forward"
Stick to your guns and press on
Be unique, be creative and don't look back
We all pay the price (time and money) when we try to be creative and different.
Hell, OSCAR took some time to develop and I'm happy that the car runs so good with it now that I'm almost past having it tucked to me by a certain shop that sucks!!
Warp speed ahead
Good luck.
Marc

I think it would be great to get the heads and whatnot, but if you are gonna go all out, go all out and chuck the LT1 block. Then, you get rid of the opti as well, and have no worries. I might have missed it Ken, but what kind of setup are you planning? 396/401 CID, LT1 Block, etc., or a motown block, all out? I figure once you go with those heads, you really aren't in the LT1 arena anymore, nor in the SBC arena. Why not go all the way, just make it EFI.

Im not saying i wont end up using a dif block, but it would be nice to use a LTx.

Ah, a chance to go to confession here....
I will be the first to admit that the "coolness" factor played alot into my buying the Dom set up. I'm not much of a track racer...can't even remember the last time I tripped the quarter mile. I just had dreams of cruising to 7-11, dropping the ricers dead in their tracks w/ my exhaust note, then opening my hood and letting them look into the face of death!
Seeing Injun's and Geo. Baxter's car evolve didn't help my need of World Domination, either! I never saw it as a competition, it was more of an inspiration to be on the same "team" with these guys. Fred especially, since we spent a good bit of time together in the trenches of project car hell. And now I take a look around....
I still have my Dom stuff, but the car that it was intended for is long gone. I have had fun playing with my BBO Trans Am, but it is broke again, and I am sick of fixing it. I re-aquired my 73 AMX, and I'm not rally sure why I did it. But, it is back in my possession, has all the chassis and fuel system work done, and it is powered by an engine I really dodn't like. So, what do I do? Maybe a Dominion 32V 396 powered AMX???????
Anywho, I'm pretty much drunk off my azz while typing this, so who knows what I'm trying to say? OH yeah...Kenny, if this is what you want, go for it! There may be easier/less expensive ways to go fast, but if ya wanna be different, and have the guts and bucks to go ahead...THEN ROCK ON, MATEY!
Welp, that is all I have to say for now. When I sleep of this drunk I am heading out top Detroit for my nephew's wedding. It will be nice to be in the promised land...MoTown, Motor City, The BIG D!
Yeah...kinda like finally going "home!"
