Anyone running LT1 on alchahol?
Re: Anyone running LT1 on alchahol?
Methanol or ethanol? Meth makes more power, but has some major disadvantages compared to ethanol. It is highly reactive and there aere undoubtedly many compoenets in the fuel system that would experience corrosion/degrdation with long term use. Ethanol is less reactive, but both are quite hygroscopic. Both have the issue of range and availability.
A whole new fuel system would be needed to handle the volume for either as ~2.2 times as much fuel is needed. This means your effective range before refueling is about 40% of gas. So, if you are talking about street use, this is a major issue. For the track, obviously it means nothing.

Methanol is most likely the fuel being discussed and can attest..there is no real advantage if the car is tuned optimal.....Tuning is easier since you can nearly run so rich alky is running out the pipes and still run close to perfect.. advantage _ less prone to detonate, releases some oxygen, wont slow down due to weather changes, cooler engine, will show some increase in torque, decrease in EGT .... disadvantage, $1,000 weldon fuel pump, fuel line increase in size along with nominally larger injectors, engine maintenance to the point of draining oil after every race and running engine fogger through engine, as well as cycling reg. fuel through the fuel system to keep injectors in check( seals etc.), engine will see lots of moisture internally so engine wear will be increased, several other reasons on both sides the coin..but I touched on the major things..
As I mentioned, I have tried it and saw no gain in comparison to reg. fuel ( with the exception of hot weather, cooler weather reg. fuel ran faster... now a improperly tuned engine would most likely see a benefit since it is .imo easier to tune..and more forgiving...its ultimately whether you are adventurous or not ,whether you try it or not..I tried it just to see if I could tune it through engine management with a steady high pressure electric pump through a standard fuel injector..does it work ???yes is it practical??? no a caution however and makes wear inevitable... You cannot run any toplube mixed in the alchohol..it will clog the injectors... hope this helps...
