anyone fab a manuel rack in their 4th gen?

I looked at the kit from madman racing but at 650 bucks plus shipping it seems pricey.I can get a rack minus the mounts and ends for 200 bucks from my local speed shop but would like to see if anyone else had tried this yet?Im a competent fabricator but im not sure on the bump steer and rod ends, thanks.

You might look at paracing.com they have lots of different pieces for a 4th gen including a bump steer kit for manual racks.

Although it is expensive, the Madman rack is very nice. A friend bought one and it seemed to be worth the money. There was a thread about this over at ls1tech.com a few months back.

Later,

Steve.

Bumpsteer, rod ends, steering linkage, and some welding.

If you're a competent fabricator you can probably save a couple hundred bucks and weld yourself. However, the parts aren't that cheap. Good joints for the steering linkage are ~100 bucks!

AJE, PA & Smith Performance are other places I'd look. You'd probably get better responses in the Drag racing section of this forum. LS1tech has a very good section, too.

You should be able to handle it, I installed one in my brothers car which has a highly modified factory crossmenber, but wasn't that bad to do.

Re: anyone fab a manuel rack in their 4th gen?

FYI: The Smith Performance rack has a small tab welded to it for the driver's side mount, and a bracket that is bolted (after some drilling) on the stock Kmember. The Madman has two "arms" that bolt directly into the stock mounts.

The point is that if you are using a stock Kmember you could get creative and fab it up fairly easily. If not, you are looking at a little more welding/fabrication.

Good luck. I wish I had a TIG welder .

edit: And the skills to use it! My MIG welds don't even turn out that well .

I have the exact same Kmember. I had the same sbc/bbc Kmember with pinto mounts for a while. The pinto mounts make it easy to basically install any rack you want, but you don't have the option to go back to power steering. I wanted to convert my car back, and I had to get a new Kmember $$$.

Food for thought for anyone considering going with a different Kmember. Not really relevent to anything in this thread .

Here's my AJE k-member and AJE manual rack. The rack cost me $600. It is a little pricey, but it's a direct bolt-on, since I ordered the k-member to accept the pinto rack. Very nice kit that comes with tie rod ends, bump steer kit, steering shaft, and steering shaft universal joints. http://www.ajeracing.com/camaro.htm
