I wanted to do it that way on mine, but there was no way i could get the runners to not be in the way of the intake bolts without really fidgiting with them to get them in there. Did you end up grinding away some of the exterior casting or...?
On mine i just bit the bullet, had the old intake bolt holes in the head welded up and driled and tapped the SBC style into them. Really wasnt the ideal way, but it works.

It took me a bit to figure out how to convert the inside bolt holes and they do need some short bolts or short studs to get in there but it's 100% LT1 now.
I'll e-mail you a pic.

Re: 90 degree elbow & single plane intakes
I did this last year for my Typhoon when I put vortec heads on it and am now making one for my Blown SBC in my 442.
I used a 1" carb spacer, a 4" schedule 40 aluminum weld elbow and a camaro LS-1 TB. I welded the spacer that came with the BBK TB to the top of the elbow. Worked out really good.
The one I am making now I will use the same elbow (which I bought from Mcmaster Carr) but will probably get one of those 105mm holley TB's or a Accufab and convert the TPS to a ford one.
Here is a link to the manifold i made. Hope it helps.

Any body know if an LS1 throttlebody has the same connectors for the IAC motor and the TPS as an LT1? I found a good deal on a 90mm FAST and was considering using it instead of an Accufab.
