4L80E How much power will it hold?

I have found a few people have done this but will it be reliable enough for my car? Im considering on doing this but would like to get more input on it. Cost looks like about $3500 unless someone knows cheaper? I broke my 4th gear at the track and not sure if I should try an auto this time or not?

4L80 is basically a THM 400 with an OD added. Assuming you wouldn't use OD at the track, how about just using a built THM 400. Should be less costly. If you need OD for long distance cruising your 1004 rwhp car(!), use a Gear Vendors OD add-on to the 400.

The Drivetrain guys might have more info and suggestions.

With 1000 rwhp nothing is going to last like it would on a car with 500whp. You can build an ultra strong 4L80E but the parts are going to cost a pretty penny. Depending on how often you drive it you will be rebuilding it maybe 1 or 2 times a season. Cause no matter what clutch disc will wear out. If money isn't an object I say go for it, but is so get the TH400, strong parts will be cheaper

I daily drive the car. I need a overdrive. My stock T56 lasted almost 3 years. Maybe im better off sticking with that trans on the street.

About 80% of the parts in the 4L80E are the same as a TH400. There are weak spots in both but it can easily be beefed up. The 4L80E will also need a computer to shift since it's an electronic valve body.

You can get a Manual Valve body for it, so no need for a computer. I looked into getting this tranny from Rossler, but the cost was staggering. You can get their Terminator II TH400 with the upgraded drum and sleeve kit that will hold 1000 Hp (according to them) and get the gear vendors and be at about the same cost and you won't be guessing if it will last.

Who is this guy you speak of? Does he have a website or phone number?

What a poor navigation web site. I see nothing anywhere on that site about 4L80E.

Check with these guys:

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/4L80E.htm

Scroll down and read about it. They claim to stand up to 900+hp.

I bought my 4L80E there and have been pretty happy with it. I'm not anywhere close to 1000hp however.

There was a post about that company on LS1Tech. A guy went with the tranny and blew it up, they rebuilt it once and then it went out again. He took it to Rossler and they rebuilt it. He was there when they did the teardown and there were alot of stock parts where there should have been aftermarket ones. Rossler also put a transbrake in the 4L80. Talking with them over the phone pretty much steered me away from the 4L80, especially with high Hp. It can work, but it just costs to much. To get a TH 400 that will take anything I can throw at it will run just under $1900 with transbrake. The 4L80 with transbrake was closer to $4000, and it still needed a computer to shift (still used the electronics with the transbrake I guess)
