396 rods

A few questions on the 396 I'm putting together.
I have a 3.875" Eagle crank and was looking at thier 6" rods. Eagle's web site lists a set of H-beams having extra clearance for strokers ans a new part.
Does anybody have any experience with these? Also considering Olivers? Can I use an off the shelf cam? Base circle? How much lift can i get away with before having problems? I would prefer to get lift with cam instead of rocker ratio.
Any recomendations on cam #'s for custom grinds? It will be a hyd. street car with CNC ported stock heads(also bigger valves), a 6-speed and a 4:10 gear.

Nobody can just "recommend" numbers for a custom grind. They'll need to know ALOT about what your going to do/want and also need the flow numbers on the heads.

I know it's a little vague, I guess suggestions would be a more appropriate choice of words. Looking for a fast, reliable street car, possible daily driver in nice weather.

Call Crower Cams for a recommendation.Ya will need a small base circle cam and They will tell ya how small.
Talk to Dave Crower he will get ya plumbed up with the straight poop.
You should get it on a billet core, even a hyd roller.

Re: 396 rods

I have Oliver forged I's in mine, love the hell out of them and tested to 7,800rpm and been thru 3 tear down/build up's. Still show no signs of any degradation. Clearance is also great with them I was running stock oil pan for a while with no issues. Moved up to the Canton w/ crank scraper on the side and had to clearance that a bit. Other than that...Oliver = my choice.

I like the new hipster talk 'dude. What up wit ya G?

The Oliver rods are real nice for clearance.... and let me throw the Lunati Pro Mod rod in there too since we're talking in that price range. Don't know about the "stroker" Eagles but I know more guys who swear by Eagle than I care to count.
Howards Sport Lite rods are nice rods as well and have good stroker clearance.

Re: 396 rods

I have a 396 blower motor w/6" rods. Sold the Eagle rods because of clearancing issues and went with the Lunati ProMod...very nice rod for the money. As for the block, the area I took the most material was at the base of the bores...at the rails it only needed a little clearancing so the bolt heads could clear. I also run a compcam 224-236 small base circle cam with the high lift lobes (+.6?? intake and .644 exhaust w/1.65 rr) and have no rod-to-lobe issues.

Re: 396 rods

Eagles are not good for marginal clearance situations. In general, I-beams are better in that respect. The Lunati Pro-Mod is a particularly good choice.

Rich,
In ours I got the Scat 4340 forged 5.7 stroker, cap screw rods. When mocking it up the heads of the ARP cap screws hit big time.Soooo I called Oliver and got a set of their cap screws and wound up taking very little(1/8") off the cyl and none off of the pan rails, couldn't believe it. Never know until ya try something.

Say NO to "y'all" Larry. That'd make you sound like some silly Texan.

Hey, at least I can understand what you're saying.... I need to read some of these guys 4 or more times to get it.

BTW- Larry, are you guys using the I or H-beam rods?

They are the "I" beam's with cap screws not bolts.

Re: 396 rods

I ran into this issue recently. I run Lunati pro-mod rods and a smaller base circle cam(1.00"). I am not sure I needed a small base circle cam now because I had to just open up the block some.

I can take some pictures if you would like of where I exactly opened it up.

We use the Eagles all the time and they fit great. Something like the oliver type I beam is nice too but much more expensive. The Eagles go right in with a normal base circle cam till around 3.800 stroke and then we cut the rods back at the corner by aout .075 which isn't NEARLY as drastic as the ones Eagle sells that will even clear a 4.000 stroke with room to spare also on a full base circle cam. You don't want a reduced base circle cam especially on a serious engine if you can help it. SCAT also makes an oliver "type" rod with 7/16 cap screws that will probably make a little more roon for you.
