Who's building your motor?

A 2" Pin should make it easier to get rods to fit not harder, the problem is that a 396 needs some serious clearancing to fit anyways.

What rods are you using?

machining at ARE, would like to assemble myself.
We clearanced block at ARE with lunati pro mod 2.1 with spacer bearing (lunati does not make 2'' rods)

I have not bought rods yet. I want rods with the most clearance that aren't to pricey I don't want to take any more material out of block worried about hitting water. Do you have any experience with eagle or scat, is the 2'' rod actually smaller or is the hole in big end just smaller.

Most times the hole is just smaller. Easy way to tell is to compare the weights of the rods vs each other. IE 6" 2.100 vs 6" 2.000 if the 2.000 is heavier then it's just a smaller hole in the same forging.

Easy thing to do is call Eagle or Scat

I haven't called eagle or scat but I did call lunati and it seemed all they wanted was a creditcard number figured eagle and scat were the same. Thanks for info anyway.

They don't usually have people on the phone that even know what you're talking about. You shouldn't need to do extreme clearancing on a 396 but it all depends on the rods. The lunati pro-mod style should clear pretty well compared to others but you will need to look at cam clearance. We just finished some 4 inch stroke stuff with stock cam height and that starts getting very tricky with the cam. You just need to check everything and know what you're doing.

Any 2 inch journal stuff is gonna be more pricey since that's mostly only race stuff along with the other small journals.

I trusty this is strictly for a very competitive race only engine. If not, I am even more confused.

Me too

But from what I have seen, among the moderate priced rods the Lunati Pro Mod are the easiest to clearance, as Racer posted.

Well, I can understand the logic of striving for an, as light a crank arm as possible, so, to each his own, I 'spose, but having to deal with a non stock journal dia. combo of 2.45/2.0, in lieu of the 2.45/2.1, on a street driven engine..... Maybe I'm getting too old for such an obsession.

lunati pro mods are not available in 2.0 and I don't want to use thick bearing. I bought crank on ebay new didn't realize I was limiting my choices on rods that clearance well and cost less than 1k.

I think the Oliver forged rods can be had for 2.000" journals. ~$7-800 I think. Check their website.
