Post Will a bigblock fit in a 3rd gen?

well the old man's truck is dieing in need of a rebuild and well the body is not worth saving so I get to have the engine Chevy 427 with a 4 speed rock crusher tranny.

Will I be able to get this to fit under the hood of a 3rd gen, I figure I could get into a 3rd gen under $1000 for a good body.

I want a nice drag/strip car, I plan to run a 100 shot with it, so it would move.

Any guides into doing this anyone done it?

i heard it was feasable but you have to take out the wiper motor, and probably do some mods to the firewall.

I am doing this right now. It will be a tight fit but it can be done. You have to buy special headers I think. At least I have to for my 454. They are $370 headers. Also depending on your tranny it can be a b*tch. I am using a turbo 400 so it won't be fun. I will have to bang in the firewall.

I have never heard of anyone having to bang their firewall. The wiper motor will interfere with the driver side valve cover. Hooker or Hedman makes headers for this conversion.

What size is the truck? No light duty trucks came with 427 car engines. If it's a 427T engine you'll have more problems than it's worth. The tall deck block needs a lot of changes before it can become a good car engine. The plus side is that a 427T block can be bored out .125"

Don't jump into something without knowing what you have. A 427T engine has lots of potential but will also cost a bit more to get there.

It can be done. Of course, the specifics of your engine will determine how easy or hard it is. If it's a tall deck, you may have some real trouble squeezing it in. I'm preparing for the buildup of a 502 into a 3rd gen, so this topic is one I'm following closely.

I did the swap about 4 years ago. All the info is on my page at www.koolmeister.com If your block is a tall deck, sell it and get a std deck.
