Where should i go to get a nice catback
I wanted to know where i can go to get a nice catback for a 89 rs 5.0 tbi camaro? doesnt matter used or new... Which brand would u suggest has a nice note and decent gains? thanx!
Re: Where should i go to get a nice catback
A few of the sponsors on this site can help you out.
Thunder Racing has a page full of them to suit most needs. http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog...&vid=6&pcid=53
Anyone know why the Borla cat-back is $810 now when it used to be in the $500-600 range?
Even at that price I'd never buy it.
Hooker is cheap and sounds the best I think. Slp has the nicest tips and is stainless steel. Random Tech I would consider the loudest. I like them all but vote Hooker. PN 66-16820

couldn't tell ya about the borla, maybe the old system was just steel, and the new is stainless steel....couldn't tell ya...i'd never pay that much for an exhaust system tho....
hooker would probably be your best bang for your buck..i dont' know hwo good the exotic ones flow, like the borla, and the other 800 dollar systems, but as far as the systems for under 500 bucks, the hooker has the best flow numbers...

Unless you put one together yourself. Ready Made Catbacks are made for one thing only, making money for the company and making a good "sound" for the consumer. I made my own Dynomax Kit which was $200 or so, after i get my meager $50 rebate. It should flow upwards of 800cfm. 3" mandrel bent intermediate pipe, and a 3" in and dual 2.5" out straight through muffler.
Re: Where should i go to get a nice catback
Whatever you do, don't put a flowmaster on it. Put one on an 89 Formula 350 twin cat I used to have and it droned like a politician on the freeway. Thought I was losing a diff bearing.
I put a magnaflow on my 98 SS and am very happy with it. Stainless polished tips, good fit, excellent sound. Got it for 330 shipped:

Another vote for the Hooker cat-back from Thunder Racing. Call and ask for Dave Tuschoff "tush-off", extension 302.
I bought my second one this spring, and it sounds great, plus I made the car go 113 MPH in the quarter mile with it on only my second ever pass, with only 30 miles on the engine. They flow really well, even the crossflow muffler configuration.
I also installed one on my Jeep Grand Cherokee: I had to custom-weld my own exhaust pipes, which shows how much I like this muffler.

Re: Where should i go to get a nice catback
yes you can piece together a real nice system also...but one one thing with that dynomax intermediate pipe, they put a huge crush on the bend going over the rear axle...i dont' see why, cuz all the other catbacks don't have that....that is a huge restriction on the I pipes the make...but yea you could have a dynomax I pipe, overaxle pipe, then a loudmouth rear section, then a dynomax bullet in place of the cat, and you could have one ofthe best flowing and loudest catbacks out..
Re: Where should i go to get a nice catback
Tell you what, I saw the ultimate high-flow exhaust on Dave Tuschoff's Z28. He had a Mufflex pipe from a custom Y-pipe, Hooker long tube headers, and the mufflex pipe was welded to a Hooker Aerochamber single in & out muffler with single exit exhaust tip. The system was either 3.5 or 4 inches in diameter, I dont remember which. However, it sounded good and worked awesome!
Unfortunately it required the purchase of the whole Mufflex system, then the scrapping of their new spintech muffler. Nope, no spintech for me. I dont believe in induced turbulence as a way of making good air flow.

GMMG makes an AWESOME sounding catback for 82-02 F-bods. A little pricey ($700 regular, $650 on GP's) but WELL worth it.
Catback
If you read the info, it states at least twice that it is for the 82-02 cars, not just 4th Gens.

Re: Where should i go to get a nice catback
I guess GMMG is awesome... just too boomy for my tastes. It also makes people wince from pain when you gun it. I like low restriction & rumbly-quiet at idle with roar at speed. That's what Hooker offers.

Besides, I have true duals, I just know a few people who have the GMMG and I dig the sound. I had the SLP LoudMouth prior, so I know all about resonation and noisy exhausts.
