whats wrong with my friends engine
hey my friend has a 92 z28 and he changed the oil and i guess forgot to fill it back up and drove it and now has a huge ticking. he took it to the shop and the guy said he undid the oil pan and there was coolant in it.
is the block shot? head gaskets? also how hard is it to put a new engine in the 3rd gens...

Wow it's been a while since I've answered any real technical questions and I may be a bit rusty, but I believe antifreeze with the oil is a head gasket. Not putting oil in it wouldn'thave caused that. It would have caused the block to sieze up or something to that effect.
could the block be cracked...
hes selling the car and he cant sell it with that knock. so we are thinkin of putting a 305 in from a junk yard.
how hard is it to swap out a motor. ive done it in a mustang before but not a 92 z can anyone give me some ideas of the problems i will run into. any special tools? and if someone wants to actually sit and write a walk through that woudl be excellent

2 words: New Motor. Bearings might be toast and be causing the ticking. Usually, it would be caused by bad lifters but if he forgot the oil, he might have hurt the bearings and I won't even say what I think about the piston rings.
so well get a junk yard engine then sell it. what should we look at when gettin a engine from the junk yard and
can someone give me some insight on what there is to pull an engine out of a camaro.. never done it before.

Coolant in the oil is a blown head gasket/cracked block.
Its pretty easy to put a new motor in a 3rd gen. I did it. It took me about 12-15 hours I think to reinstall my motor and crank it over. Remember this was working all by myself on my maiden voyage doing anything like this.

Well
Is it a tick or a knock. If it is a tick it could be a lifter, If it is a knock it could be a rod knock. Also if the car has coolant in the oil watch out could cause hydro lock you don't want that. The water jackets on the block or head could be cracked. Or the headgasket is gone. Your never said what heat he got up to or any other symptoms.
