weird problem

ok i have a 86 305tpi z28 and i was out at the track last night and when i took off from the line it cut out like 10 feet after the tree. i thought it might have just been because i mashed down on the throttle and it just bogged/cut out. well im back in the staging lane and i do my burnout and it just dies after the 2 seconds i smoked the tires. then i had to push it to the side cuz it just wouldnt keep running.well about an hour or so later i went to go start it and it did the same thing. it would run for 10 seconds then die. so i decided to try and turn the car around so we could tow it home and i stared it and managed it get it moving so i just told my buddy to follow me and we will start towing me from where my car dies. well i made it all the way home without any problems. then when i got home i turned the car off, and went to go start it again and it was doing the same thing as before it would start aand run for 10 seconds then die.

So basicly i checked for any new codes, and nothing showed up. i know the fuel pump is kickin on, and i changed the fuel filter today between shcools. didnt solve anything. so im pretty sure its its getting a good amount of fuel now. My first guess was going to be the filter because i figured if it was the spark that was bad i would be smelling lots of unburnt gas.

when i get home today im gonna pull out a plug or two out, to see how they are looking.

also does anybody know some other things i should check or look for.

any help would be great

Thanks,
Chris

alright well i changed the distributor cap and rotor and same out come , it would run for a lil bit then die, so i undid the relays that i put in and it seems to run fine but check engine is on. well i reconnected the relays and disconnected the maf sensor and it still runs fine, but if i turn the car off, plug the maf sensor back in and try to start it it just dies. so i think its the maf sensor.

anyone by change have one laying around that they might want to get rid of?

also will a maf sensor off a 87 tpi 350 work?
my buddys has a 350 tpi and i was wondering if it was gonna hurt anything if i try his maf sensor on my car.

Yes a MAF off an 87 350 will work. If I were you I would check your battery cable and make sure it isnt loose at the starter or touching your exhaust. I had a similar problem and my battery cable was melted and sometimes touchin my headers causeing the car do die for no reason. Check your throttle position sensor too. I hope this helps.

i decided to replace the relays for the maf sensor and the car seems to be running fine now.
i figured if the replay was bad it would run in closed loop mode but it didnt so i dont know. the cars got its own mind.

no the code is gone now, i disconnected the battery for a minute then reconnected it and no code and no problems. so hopefully that was all that was wrong. its been about four days since i changed the relay and it seems to be running fine.
