Using a TPI (L98 maybe) to make a custom Squarebore EFI

Howdy, I am looking to efi my 80 camaro. Only thing is I dont have the $$$ for a F.A.S.T. ecu (as much as I want one) and I am not sure if a older TPI (L89 maybe?) will work for me. I have a 350 stroked to 377ci, 10.5:1 compression, pretty raunchy cam, camel hump heads and around 400hp on 94octane (according to a couple dyno programs) and some real power on race gas (tried 112low lead and it just rocked) The problem is the carb I have is just plain worn out and needs replacing and I am a fan of efi. So heres the intended project, TPI injection stuffed into a custom squarebore intake. That way I dont have to screw around with remote thermostats, hotspots in cooling, and stock TPI intake. Now the potential problems I see are:

  • Can I modify a stock PROM to deal with the big cam and compression? Or buy a better one?
  • throttlebody and IAC. If i made a custom TB or modified a 4 barrel throttle plate to become a TB only what would I do about the IAC motor etc. I DO want fast idle etc for cold starts. Maybe making a plate to bolt the stock (or bigger aftermarket) TPI TB to the squarebore? wonder what sort of flow problems I would get.

What else am I overlooking? Any good message boards, books or people to check out to help me along? Anyone have a TPI setup for sale if this will work?
Thanks for any info guys.

nice setup you have goin there man!

first off, for a tpi setup, i would suggest going with a Holley Stealth Ram if you dont have to worry about hood clearence issues. they go fo i think 400 or so on www.jegs.com minus the throttle body and wire harness. look into this option and see where that takes you.

for the ecm get on from a 91 or 92 car and it will be speed density. by doing that you wont have to worry about a maf sensor. then buy yourself some prom burnning equipment and burn your own proms. doing it yourself will more than likely make more power because they can be customized to your exact combo and "attitude" if you will of your engine. it will also allow you to retune our car at the track for the weather conditions using a cheapo laptop.

check out the prom and tpi boards over at www.thirdgen.org for more answers. the tpi board will answer any questions about any tpi intake and the prom board will set you in the right direction for prom burnings.
