Upgrading Cam...Computer Ques.
Upgrading Cam...Computer Ques.
There was a question earlier today that made me think...will I have to change anything with the computer in my 350TPI if I get a cam? Or will the computer automatically compensate from this modification? Also, after getting a cam, would getting a chip burned benefit me more than if I had it burned when it had the stock cam? Thanks guys.

Re: Upgrading Cam...Computer Ques.
If the cam you put in was similar to the stock cam the ecm would be able to compensate for the change. It would not be a perfect tune but it would run. But why change the cam if you cant put in something more aggressive? I wouldnt bother with getting a chip burnt until you start doing mods. IE cam swap -porting the intake and exhaust with headers. Also most mail order chips are not very good, however there are few people out there that can do good jobs. The best way to do it is to do it yourself, or if your like me I know someone who burns chips and had it dyno tuned.
Re: Upgrading Cam...Computer Ques.
One more question, when installing a cam on a thirdgen, is it possible to take the bumper and radiator off the car and insert the cam in that way or must the engine be pulled?
Re: Upgrading Cam...Computer Ques.
You dont have to remove the bumper, but you do need to remove the radiator and either remove the air conditioning, or carefully bend it up out of the way.
I ran a ZZ4 cam and corvette heads on my 350 5-speed with the stock 305 5-speed chip. But when I put in the LT4 HOT cam, it was running way rich and wouldnt idle. I started doing my own custom chips, then.

Re: Upgrading Cam...Computer Ques.
I dont see how the A/C would get in the way, and I also dont get how you can do it without taking the bumper off, because to me it would seem like you would have to tilt it in...but it doesnt look like you can do that.
Re: Upgrading Cam...Computer Ques.
what year is it?
91-92 and maybe 90, i forgot, are speed density
while the older ones are mass air flow
the mass air flow has an easier time compensating for cam swaps
speed density needs a reprogram to run good

By the way, I have helped on three in-car camshaft swaps. Not once did we take the bumper off. Only the radiator and the a/c, as I said above.
