Trasnmission Problem

Hey guys, I just got an 84 Z and I think there is something wrong with the transmission. It is fine accelerating up to around 15 mph, the rpms are good but then after that it feels like its slipping. It feels like its not getting in gear. after 15 mph the rpms still go up but the car is not accelerating at all. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

when it shifts to 2nd how does it feel.Does shift hard or slide into gear. When you get to 15mph try steping on the gas in a reving motion. If you rpms go up and down freely its slipping. If its original its most likely time for a rebuild.

uh-oh been there, done that. I am afraid it's time to do the rebuild boogie. When you go to second you should feel a slight but firm motion. If there is ANY slippage, most likely the transmission is done. I have been through more transmissions than you can shake a stick at, and what you desribe is always the first step. But heck, check the fluid and change the filter anyway, couldnt hurt! Also check the TV cable alighnment. And good luck! I think you need it.

Depends on your transmission.

TH350/400 = About 150$ to 400$ [Partial to Full]
200/700-R4 = About 700$ to 1,200$ [Partial to Full]
Cost of a filter/fluid as a final check = About 20$ [Complete]

My 89 went through 4 transmissions in 4 years. I loved the car, but could never figure out why it went through tranny's like it did. I always babied that car. Finally sold it because I wasn't buying a 5th tranny at a (discount) 800$ Price. Miss that car.

Probably your TV cable being incorrectly adjusted or if they were just rebuilding your old trans, it probably warped the case and they never checked it before throwing new parts at it.

Warped cases are rare. Most builders of the 700R4 do not know what they are doing as evidenced by how many transmissions people go through before (if at all) they get one that works "right".
