TPI running rich

I just had a Scoggin Dickey Vortec TPI engine put in my 87 IROC. PCM4LESS did a custom burn.

I have put about 700 miles on it now. The tailpipes have black **** on them as if the engine is running too rich.

What kind of shop should I contact about getting this fixed? Is this something a Dyno/Tune can fix? Or is there something that can be adjusted mechanically?

Did PCMforLess do a chip based on your specs or were they sitting at the car with a scan tool to know exactly what the engine wants? Its practically impossible to tune a car over the internet. It could be they have the computer set too rich, or you could have a leaky injector, or oil going into the combustion chamber, or any other little thing. You need to get a scan tool on it and see if its actually running rich or not.

I was not sure there was a tool for old '87 cars. Do you recomend a Dyno/tune?

I am very car illiterate. I just bought the parts ya know.

PCM4LESS asked me a million questions. I gave them a ton of info. Most of the info came from the build sheet for the motor so it was pretty clear.

I did tell them I had a descreened MAF and SLP runners but the shop was unable to get the runners on and I didnt descreen the MAF yet. Could this be my prob?

I use TTS Datamaster on my laptop, but you can use lots of different tools. Your local auto parts store sells scan tools, I think they're the Actron name, they're orange. Your system is OBD1 with the 12-pin rectangle connector, not OBD2 with the 16-pin D shaped connector.

you can "wash" an engine out in several miles of driving... not saying you are going to but just as stated do not trust an chip from someone that is not in your car tunning it.

go to your local board section here and put a request out for someone that can tune obd-I. you will have a hard time as there are very few people in the country let alone your state that can do it but hopefully you can find someone that can. if not as mentioned find someone with a computer program and the connector to scan your car to tell you what's going on.

who put your motor in? i'm assuming you didn't do it or you would have looked into this before the swap. check with the garage that did it as well. i wouldn't drive your car much more until you figure this out as something like this "can" be very serious and that's an expensive mistake to make.

also, at some point someone might try to get you to buy or use a a/f ratio guage to hopefully determine how rich/lean your motor is running... do not trust this alone. there is a reason our cars have so many sensors to the ecm and assuming they all work with the proper scanning program/tools it can tell the tunner exactly what's going on.

a/f guages are just a tool to help in the tunning process. they are not the final answer.

good luck, not to scare you but you'll need it..

I have the emmission sheet that tells why my car failed emmission. It is a sheet that breaks down what elements failed and passed. Like the PPM and %'s. Would it help if I posted the numbers?

Thanks for the info.

Yea I had someone else put it in. I called my buddy that installed the motor. He thinks a place in Fredericksburg can Dyno/Tune. It is over $400 but it'll be worth it. I'm not driving the car at all anymore. I definately want to get it tuned first.

Thanks for the info.

It seems like it could be a normal amount. Its running really strong. But it wont pass Virginia emission. I just thought it would. I'm going to take it today again to see if it passes. Now that I have broke in the new engine and cat. conv.

If it doesn't pass no big deal. My dad has an auto dealership in Alabama and he will register it down there for me. I just didn't want Alabama tags. But I wont have to get it safety inspected or emissions tested ever again if I get him to do this. Plus I wont have to have a front tag and I can do more stuff to my car without fear.

Im sure who did the chip made a little on the rich side just to be safe, new motors like being rich rather than lean.

Have you pulled a plug out yet? I would pull one out (the easiest) and see what it looks like. It should be a burned orange-ish color around the electrode. That will tell you if its way rich/lean....ever get that adjustable fuel reg. on there??

Did not install adj. fuel reg. yet. Also didn't get the runners on yet either. Its tough to find someone reliable around here.

I'm ready to get it all done now. Gotta install the tri-pillar pod with my trans. temp, air/fuel, and Stewart electric tach also.

Know any good shops?

I didn't pull a plug. I might do that today after I wake up. I work midnights again.

Na sorry man,I know of shops but I do my own work so I dont really know who does GOOD work.

Have you tried calling Bigfoots Speed & Customs? Their down here in Fred and they do work like that, but then again I dont know how "good" it is or what they would charge...may be worth a phone call to see though.

Found the site real quick:
