Torsen?
Is Torsen a good brand?
What is this I hear of a Torsen T2R rearend(or whatever the hell it is)?
What kind of Torsen could I get, but will fit into my stock rearend? I don't want a all new rearend, just insides? I am lookin at preferably 3:55's, and Posi..
Thanx a bunch,
Matt

The Zexel-Torsen differential is a strong reliable unit. Strong enough and reliable enough that GM put them in most LS1 cars. They have no clutches to burn out so they last longer than the older clutch style differentials.
You can either contact Torsen about the differential for your 7.5" 10 bolt with 26 spline axles - expect to pay a good bit! Or since you already plan a gear swap too, SLP sells the differentials for $99. The only catch is you will need 28 spline axles, which can be found in some 89 cars and all 90-92 cars.
3.55 gears are not available for our rears. The closest you can come is either 3.42 or 3.73, with 3.42 being the better choice for a daily driver. You will need the gears for a 3 series carrier if you plan on going with the SLP "takeoff" Torsen unit.

Ok.. first off, can you explain what exactly a "spline" is? Hear about them all the time.. but what the hell are they?
Ok.. so lemme get this straight.. SLP (a web-addy, please?) sells my diff. for about 100-bucks..
How much for the 28 spline axles from a used vehicle?
What the hell ya mean "change gears"? How much will they be? where can I get them?
Thanx man,
Matt

SLP is @ www.slponline.com
The diff that SLP sells for $100 is the T2 not the T2-R. It is still a good diff, but the T2-R has a larger side-to-side bias and won't free wheel like an open diff if you lift one tire or the other. The T2 if just fine it you not going to autocross or run road courses.

The diff is $100, gears are not included
3.42 gears are ~$200
28 spline axle shafts $???
Installation $???
The Zexel-Torsen differential is a limited slip differential. The terms "limited slip differential" and "posi" are interchangable.
