torque converter questions

Okay two questions
1)what is the stall speed for a stock tq converter on a L98/700R4
2)my car is relatively stock (full exhaust, possibly ported and polished heads was told that from previous owner but havent had the motor opened up yet) what is the highest stall that i would want to be putting in the car? and what would be the ideal stall for the car. This car is a daily driver for the 6 months of the year that its on the road.

Stock stall is about 1700 and I would not go above a 2500.

about 500 above stock stall might be good, depending on the cam you want to use in the future.

If you are going to do the T56 swap this summer, a few months away, why not either do the swap now? That or wait for the swap to occure. Why go thru the expense of getting a TC for a while?

because im sick of this stupid drive train vibe, my only conclusion is i have a couple fins broken inside the converter because sitting still i will occasionally get a loud flapping noise that sounds awful, and when driving at high rpms it turns into a drive train vibe and weve isolated just about everything else. I dont intend on buying a new converter but i wont be able to get a tranny till probably july/august so i put up a couple posts up in some classifieds sections hoping i can find a used one or something an pick it up for cheap so i can have my car running good for now. This post was just so i could figure out what stall range the car would operate well under if im going to pick up a used one. Worst case cenario i will just live with the problem until i can afford a new tranny and then prey to god that fixes it because after everything weve done theres nothing else it could be

i just took the torque converter out of my car last week and it was a 2800 stall on a rebuilt 350 and 350 turbo tranny. torque converters will have a labeled stall speed but it isn't necessarily correct. its dependant on your torque and hp output from the motor, the more the torque your motor puts out, the higher the stall converter will stall... the labeled stall is usually pretty close to the actual stall speed, but its more just to use them as a scale of reference. for instance, a 3000 stall might stall on a stock motor at 2600 or if you have a rebuilt motor puttin out 450 ft/lb it may stall at 3400.... it just depends on the converter and the motor. i'm now planning on going to about a 3200 stall to put in my car just for fun, if i was you i'd probley put a 2800 stall in it. it will still be easily streetable, but will kickdown harder when you decide you wanna punch around town. more than likely you won't notice much of a change, it just saves your motor from "******* down" right off the punch. my advice to you is to check out e-bay to get a stall converter, i was looking on there the other day and there are alot of new and used ones for sale alot cheaper than you would normally pay...

That was going to be my suggestion too. Even brand new they are only about $150. And they stall somewhere between 2000-2200 rpm.

There are a lot of things I don't know. I just don't respond to those threads.

That's also why I let my fiance do all the cooking.
