Time for a dumb question

So what are all the possible scenarios that can happen when you spin the engine too high and it starts knocking real bad?

I'm sure a rebuild is in order but what is the possible damage?

Lack of oil...bad bearings. Float and bend valves/pushrods. Pull the valve covers first, and check that. That would be the cheapest and easiest thing, assuming that the valves and pistons survived....

Usually rod bearing are the ones to go first on an over-revved motor...atleast this has been the case with my stock 305 back in the day.

Been there and done that too. Step one, pull the calve cover....

If you rebuild, go 383. The crank kit is not much more, and you won't regret not doing it. The previous owner had mine rebuilt about 5k miles before I bought it, and had a ton of money in it, or I would tear it back out and stroke it. I am still toying with a blower in the future.....

Either way, yank the pushrods first.....

When you spin the engine too high...lots of things

you could bend all your pushrods collapse all your lifters and wipe out all the lobes off your camshaft like i did luckily i didn't bend any valves or mess up anything in the bottom end

Re: Time for a dumb question

Well, the pushrods and the valves are ok so i guess it's time to pull the engine. Luckily, my sister-in-law has an uncle that will let me use his machine shop and her old man has a garage and all the tools necessary to pull and rebild the engine. I kind of like the 383 shown here.

The one using the stock TPI setup.
