Third Gen Issues... WTF!
Posting for a friend.....
I'm having issues with one of the third gens. This is pissing me off beyond belief and I just have no fracking clue whats going on. I know there are a lot of you that have OWNED third gens who now have fourth gens (sell outs.. lol) but let me tell you what the heck is going on.
Its a late third gen, manual, 305.. I was driving the other night about 6 miles from my house (where I had left) and the car starts to buck really bad and eventually dies. The motor will turn on like there is no issues and it will run, but the car won't frickin' go sometimes without bucking hard core. I think I got whiplash. Whatever though, So the car sits for 20 minutes and I go pick it up from where I left it and the car drives the rest of the way home like nothing ever happened. My dad made me fill up on gas just to make sure I wasn't running out of gas, I might be a little ditzy sometimes, but I wasn't running out of gas.
So we drive it the next day to go pick up some tires for it (yes, FTW) Its all highway driving and nothing seems to go wrong. Get off the highway, and bam! The car starts to do it again. It dies on me. Cools down for a half hour, then makes it to the destination. So It seems to only be going like 6- 15 miles before the issue starts to happen. Its reving up the limiter really high, then just kickin' the bucket. We changed the coil thinking thats what it might be, but its still doing it.
It gets me to work and back, cause I live so close to where I work, but its doing it on any trip around 10 miles. So Its limiting me to where I'm going. Anyone have any clue what it might be?

Fuel filter, if it's TPI/TBI check your fuel pressure while driving and see if it faulters at this time. Your pump might be going south. Check for loose electrical connectors that may be comming loose when hot. this is a start.
right before the car starts up, turn the key to the on position, you should hear the pump turn on for 2 seconds and then shut off
now u know what your fuel pump sounds like
the next time this happens and the car stalls out and dies, check it again
turn the key to on and listen for your fuel pump, if there is no noise, then its your fuel pump going bad
very fun job by the way

sounds like what my formula did when the MAF went south. as i would get on the interstate it would buck real hard, like nothing i have ever felt. finally i figured it was the MAF, cant remember how i figured it out but that was the prob. see if a friend has a MAF you can borrow to diagnose. as long as its not an 85 TPI car you can borrow any of the other years. 85 was a 1 year setup.
