TFS heads / pushrod length

I'm doing some checking for a friend on this one. He has a set of twisted wedge G2 style heads. They are going onto a late model roller block with factory roller lifters. I don't have a pushrod length checker and he doesn't want to take the time to do measurements. What length pushrods intake and exhaust are you running with what rockers? Thanks in advance.

Re: TFS heads / pushrod length

If I were your friend, I would definitely buy the pr length checker and take the time to make absolutely sure you have the right length pushrods. Ive had 2 different motors in my 'bird, the first one I didnt check the length in great detail-and the end result was my guides got eaten up, car started burnin more oil than gas..

My second motor I took the time and had my buddy at the machine shop check it out for me and *surprise* We found it needed 2 different length pushrods! Save yourself the trouble and do it right the first time. All motors can slightly differ, and those twisted wedge heads really have odd geometry.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I'd really like to know what your lengths spec'd out at to get a baseline idea. Anyone else?

Re: TFS heads / pushrod length

dave you cant ask that ? here..any answer here would be a gues w/o actually measuring your exact motor..im sorry..yes they sell certain lengths for certain engines, but those are "close enough"measurementds or lengths, meaning they would work for most engines, but even then your still not sure if your going to get the correct rocker alignment and geometry w/o checking...especially with using an aftermarket head such as a twisted wedge where a totally different length pushrod is required

Re: TFS heads / pushrod length

Guys, I appreciate what your saying. I'm well aware of having correct valvetrain geometry. I'm builing and sb2.2 motor right now. Please, can someone tell me what lengths they are using. They make different length pushrod checkers and I want to know where to start before I have the guy buy one. Is this a hard question to answer?

Yes, in fact it is. Every engine is different. Checking for proper pushrod length is important for sure, but is absolutely CRITICAL on the TFS twisted wedge heads. Having them slightly off can cause all sorts of problems. It's one of the main reasons the early G1 heads had such a bad rep, that and the substandard guides. The twisted wedge design changes the standard 23* SBC geometry. Add that to decked blocks, milled heads, different base circle cams, different ratio rockers and the problem multiplies.

But, if you insist, a good friend of mine is running some cleaned up G2s on his 84Z, and his setup (slightly milled heads, small base circle cam, with 1.6s) required + .100" pushrods.
