jeff, since your 91 is electronic, I would think it is you VSS going bad

 

BTW I dont know if he knows this but the sensor is in the tranny....dont know exactly where but I think its in the tail...can anyone verify this?

 

hmm...my speedo doesn't work unless im moving at 10mph+... if your speedo isnt working for a good 10 miles, i wouldn't doubt it's your VSS acting up on you. $60+ bucks to pick up a stock replacement at the dealership. just put the gear from the old VSS into the new one when you replace it.

Yep, that sounds just like a bad VSS. Mine does the same thing, but I'm cheap . The VSS is located in between the tranny mount and the tailshaft (kind of) on the driver's side.

 

what is vss? what else does it control.....doesn't bother me but might be worth fixing.

From Chilton's manual:

The VSS is located on the transmission and sends a pulsing voltage signal to the ECM which is converted to miles per hour. This sensor mainly controls the operation of the TCC (torque converter clutch) system, shift light, cruise control, and activation of the EGR system.

 

so it controls how the torque converter works as well?

hmm, sounds like it should be fixed then....i can deal without a speedo, not the rest though.
