t-56 swap: use LT1 bellhousing? or aftermarket one?

just what the post says: should i use the stock LT1 housing (which i know bolts right in), or use an aftermarket piece (lakewood, hays, etc.)??

when would it be necessary to go to an aftermarket housing? thats basically what i need to know...

I would say it depends on what kind of action your car is going to see. If you are going to be making 5000 rpm launches on full slicks with 700 horsepower, then there is always the chance you could break a flywheel and cut your legs off. If you are running a 400 horse street car that launches at 1200 rpm on nitto's then I wouldn't waste my money. Freek accidents can still happen with low horse drivelines, but you would have to be pretty parinoid to safeguard against loosing a flywheel on a low horse street car. If blow-proof housings were cheap that would be a different story, but they are not.

hmm, thats what i assumed, but thanks. i just wanted to be sure. the motor is pushing just over 500HP/TQ, running through a spec stage 3 w/ aluminum flywheel. i know i should be doing lots of really hard launches on an aluminum fly, but the car will see its fair share of the strip, in addition to its street duty....

should i be more worried cause its an aluminum flywheel?

I personally wouldn't worry about running a stock bellhousing with your set up. I am going to be running around 800 horse through my stock T-56 bellhousing. One thing you might want to do, and that I will probably do is run a bellhousing blanket. It is basically a bullit proof vest for your bellhousing. However, again in your case I don't think you have much to worry about, there are a TON of guys running over 500 horse, with no extra bell housing protection.

Oh, And the aluminum flywheel is not going to be an issue, though I personally would have gone steel.

I would rethink using that clutch. Here's what happened to a buddy's car last weekend. He was running a SPEC Stage
III Carbon clutch with about 2000 miles on it. His car is a 12.2-12.3@114-115mph car.

His foot was numb for quite awhile afterwards. Luckily nothing happened to him. He and a bunch of other guys of MAFB are going to a tranny blanket.

Hope that helps

holy god! was that clutch destroyed off the launch? if so, what was he launching at?

thats with 2000 miles on it?? incredible. i heard nothing but good things about these clutches...what did spec say when he contacted them? they told my local dealer here that if anything on the clutch blew due to defect theyd replace it free of charge...but i guess "defect" is a relative term. still though, i was told the stage 3 should handle just over 700 ponies...

i will most definately invest in a tranny blanket, as it was suggested to me by others but i hadnt taken it that seriously since my car wont be an all-out drag car making anything over 550HP/TQ. now i think theyre right!

That wasn't from a launch. That was 2nd gear at 6000 getting ready to shift into 3rd. I believe he launches around 3000.

We've heard of a couple clutches coming apart but this is the worst anybody's seen. My Dad pulled his out in his Comp TA and his looks like it has gotten too hot. Maybe the heat is killing these? Don't know but that clutch isn't in my Dad's car anymore after those pictures...
