switching rearends
switching rearends
i have an 84 z28 that has drum brakes and im getting a rearend out of a 91 z28 the has posi and disc brakes. My question is, do i need to do anything to convert the rear ends?
thx for the help

yea 1100 bucks! 800 for parts and 300 for labor. so i should just search ebay for a posi rear end from a late model 3rd gen? but will i still be able to put 3.73 gears into a stock posi rear w/o spending alot of cash?
im getting ready to swap out my drum rear also. i have a BW 9 bolt 3.27 posi disc rear i got for nothing. im currently waiting on the PBR backing plates and caliper cradles. for the swap i know you will need the E brake cables and the lines for the calipers. i've heard of people flairing the lines and running new lines of the stockers. you will need a prop valve if you have drums and are using the stock dic setup. thats one reason why im going PBR... can reuse my old prop valve. other then that, the rear bolts right in. 4th gen rears are a direct bolt on also. i would go wit ha BW rear though, they are stronger then a stock 10 bolt andyou maintain your stock backspacing on your rear wheels. unlike the 4thgen rear swap since its 4inchs longer then the 3rd gens
first time i did it, it took 3 hours.. i have it down to 2 1/2 now.
its pretty easy... everything unbolts, the new one bolts in.
as long as the brake line from the axle has the same fitting as the hard line on the chassis, you're fine... i know 89 to 02 are the same, but i dont know when they changed it to the new one.. i read that it was in 83, but im not sure.
you need the parking brake cables if going from drum to disc.
its a bolt in thing though. hardest part is balancing it on the jack to get the bolts started, and bleeding the brakes when you're done... and thats not too hard.

question, when converting from the regular iron calipers on the 9 bolts to the PBR setup, what year E brake cables are needed to adapt to the PBR calipers? i havent bought any calipers yet so i figured id ask what year car to get the E brake cables and calipers/rotors from. ill be buying them new from NAPA or someplace problebly, unless someone knows a good place to get them online.
awesome. should i get the calipers and rotors from that year? or a later year? im thinking of getting the latest year, i know sometimes they perfect a piece as the years go on. like the heavier built 700r4s in 89+ fbodies... or the WC T-5 in 88+

I'd take my chances on a complete used rear. There on e-bay all the time in the $200 -500 range.Or call a junkyard and if they don't have one they usually have a nationwide parts locater.
