Swapping Motors

If you take a 305 out and stick a 350 in a 1986 Camaro, how much work will it be? Will the 350 work with the motor mounts, transmission, etc?

Re: Swapping Motors

Depending if your state has smog checks, I would keep it in. I just installed a 350 in an 86 Z-28 with 4bbl. I am assuming your 86 is the same. Everything will bolt up including your accessories. If you have the $, I would get some headers since you are installing another engine and this would be the best time to install it. As far as sensors goes, you will need to replace the knock sensors and I believe another sensor as well but I don’t remember the name. Also go with an open air element to go with your setup.

Re: Swapping Motors

everything will swap right over including motor mounts as long as the heads are the same style...either 86 and older or 87 and newer.

not sure about zrs,but when i swapped a 305 TPI to a 350 TPI i ran the car w/ the 305 computer and used all the sensors off of the 305,they swap right over.

when u change motors, theres a metal pipe that takes air from the air pump on the pass. side to the pipes on the exhaust manifold on the driver side that u need to leave off when u put the motor back in. it makes gettin to the bellhousing bolts hell as well the stud on the back of the pass. side head where there are 4 ground wires/grounding strap. i also put in a set of Hedman headers while i changed motors (w/o the air tubes) and i just ran a 5/8 heater hose from the air pump to the metal tube that runs down the back of the motor and goes to the cat,so it looks like its working...but really its doing nothing.

Re: Swapping Motors

Rice Killer87,
I am in the process of assembling my 350 with vortec heads (machined for high lift, screw in stud and 1.6 rockers) with the LT4 Hot Cam. I see you are using a 600 Edel carb. Are you planning on using a higher cfm carb? I am still debating on what type of induction setup I will be going with. Any suggestion?
