Which cam?

Ok.. here are my mods, and future mods:
Performer 600 carb, performer intake, hedmann headers, hi-flow cat, aftermarket distributor (accel I think..).
I am looking for a cam that makes some damn fine power, keeps an almost stock sounding idle, makes power (i am looking for maximum torque over hp) from idle to maybe 5500 rpm, maybe a BIT lower, and something that does not suck gas.
All help appreciated,
Matt

Re: Which cam?

sounds like a contradiction in terms

good power, stock idle, doesn't suck gas......good luck

maybe look into some of the truck cams...since they are optimized for torque..needed for towing.

Re: Which cam?

ok, well i dont care about anything except for gas sucking I guess. as long as it makes great power, and doesn't suck gas, I can live with the others.

OK, it's not the most thorough resource, but this page will give you a rough idea, maybe enough to get you started...

Hope it helps.

Re: Which cam?

Yeah, if you dont wanna suck gas, you probably don't wanna drive a modded camaro...

Sort of a contradiction of terms there as well...an american v8 that doesnt chug gasoline...

My buddy had that problem with his 5.0 thunderbird supercharged. He ended up payin like, 500 bucks for a cavalier clunker to take to work and stuff...its a decent idea...if you dont live in new jersey...or near new jersey, heh.

Re: Which cam?

Heh - yeah, when you think about cars, it seems that you pretty much have to look at it this way:

  • Economy / MPG
  • Reliability
  • Power

You can pick any two you like!

Re: Which cam?

Thanx for the web-addy's everybody, but the thing is.. I don't know the first thing about choosing a cam I relize that the higher the lift, the sweeter, meaner, and more America Muscle sounding the car will be; and that by putting in a high-lift cam the top-end of the car will be amazing; and that the idle of teh car will suck gas horribly; But that is about it. I know really nothing else. When I say "I dont want it to suck gas", I relize my car is gonna suck gas either way I go. But I mean, I dont want the cam to take away like 4-mpg. After reviewing that Clevite website, I am thinking that I want something around 195' or so.. but it says that you can not have more than 9.0:1.. My Camaro has 9.5:1.
Any help?

id say one of those cams

but honesly, since you know so little about engines, particularly camshafts, maybe that is not the wisest modification right now.

Re: Which cam?

I actually know quite a bit for a 17 year old about engines (not that THAT is saying much..) but cams are totally diff. for me. It is moreso an ART to cam something, and to ground up cams.. not just an easy choice. But that is why I am consulting this board, as I know very little about cams. I am hoping that this board will be a little bit of help in my little quest.

Actually, none of the cams you mentioned will work for him, without investing in an expensive aftermarket roller setup. Read the sig....his car is an '85, so it will be a hyd. flat tappet LG4...only the '87 LG4's were roller motors from the factory.
