Steering wheel shakes while driving

I had the frontend rebuilt minus the steering box which they said was loose. I just packed my wheel bearings (only drivers side, passenger side seemed fine) and tightened up the steering box a little to get the play out of the steering wheel. Driving around the steering wheel still shakes a little from time to time (driving strait). Do you guys have any suggestions?

Balance the tires and get a alignment.

Re: Steering wheel shakes while driving

sometimes a brand new tight front end will do that

i've also had bad tires do that, even though they balanced out perfect.

try rotating the tires to see if it helps

is your sway bar links to tight? or to loose?

is it possible that your rotors are slightly warped?

I had a front end vibration driving me crazy once. turned out to be a tire. Cord was seperating; you couldn't see it from the outside, but it was obvious once tire was dismounted.

Oh yeah, figured it out after borrowing some front rubber, and vibration went away.

don't know about you but i can't rotate my tires unless i have them unmounted then remounted on diff wheels. (b/c of the off set of the rear wheels you know) plus the fact that i have 245/60 on the front and 255/60 on the rear doesn't help the cause either.

Re: Steering wheel shakes while driving

Well, I belive my back brakes are getting thin (squeeking noise coming from back when trying to stop) and plus the front brakes looked fine when I was packing my bearings.

To rotate my tires I would have to get them removed off of the rim and put on another rim (Iroc wheels).

It happened more before I had the front end rebuilt and tightened up the steering box. It doesn't happen as often, but it still happens occasionally.

I'll double check all of my rotors first and I'll check my sway bars and see if that helps. Then I'll have my tires rotated/balanced. Hopefully it's not a bent rim, course the steering wheel would probably shake alot more if it was.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Did you over tighten the Wheel Bearings? Did you tighten them enough? Bad struts, bad balance, bad alignment, bad tires.. All could be a problem.. Seen tires that the wheel bearings were tightened too much LOCK UP.. Not trying to scare you.. Just letting ppl know...

I only packed the wheel bearings on the drivers side because the passenger side seemed fine. I double check the passenger side nut though and make sure it isn't too tight. The struts were replaced about 6 months ago.

Mark the tires and rims...dismout the tires, if they are in good shapre mount the tire with the mark 180* off where it was marked on the rim, and re balance...this may help, used to do it all the time at ford...worked like a charm, crappy tires just wont balbnce out sometimes.
