Steering Column Loose

My steering column is loose in the vertical direction. It is a tilt steering wheel and when it is down to where I like it I can push up on the bottom of it and it will move up and then come back down to where I had it. Is this normal or do I have a problem with the column?

There are 3 screws inside the column that are loose. They'll be very small torx head screws and they're very hard to get to. Most of the column needs to be dissassembled to reach the screws.

As I remember, mine had 4 screws, but I could only get to 3. They are designed for a "torx socket" to be used to tighten them. I managed to use a standard 6 point socket and it worked very well. It will work in a pinch (it did for me).

Good luck!

Mine came loose from hanging on the steering wheel in corners since the seats offer no support for that stuff. That was my best explanation.

Yes there are 4 screws, inverted torax is the name of that fastner,
Once these work loose you`d better loctite them or they back out quicker the next time. These screws are about three inches long and thread into aluminum so they strip if torqed alot. The lock collar must be removed to access the fourth screw. It`s a lot to take apart if you a first timer. Good luck

Use loctite or lose your nuts
