starting problems

ok here is the deal.. i have a 1986 IROC-Z 305 TPI....... here recently i have had some problems getting it to start... When you go to start it for the first time of the day, it will normally start flawlessly... but if i drive for like 5 mmin. and shut it off, and start it immediatley, it starts fine.... but if you let it sit for another five it will not start... it trys to start and turns very slowly, the if you do that for a couple of times it stops spinning... and then when you turn the key the lights start to dim, and some times it will make a clicking noise, and others it will make a whining noise.. any suggestions ??? thanks for any help !

Heat soak. The starter and solenoid are right next to the exhaust and when it gets hot it can bind up. It's a fairly common problem with SBC's...get a good heat shield for the starter or get a gear reduction starter that will provide more clearance from the exhaust (and more cranking power too).
