t56 transmission.. need input
t56 transmission.. need input
ok well most of you know what i am doing.. going to slap in a 454 bbc into my 87 maro.. and most people are telling me to go for t56 tranny's.. well i've found one
here is one i found on ebay... T56 Six Speed Camaro Transmission, however it only fits 93-99 Camaro's and Firebirds. so i did some searching and found this
93-97 T-56 6 speed transmission into 82-92 Comaro-Firebird...
so basically stock, that tranny wont fit into my car unless i get that custom cross member?
ok, call me stupid but i want to get this straight. it says 6speed.. that means it has 5 forrward gears with overdrive witch is the 6th gear and a reverse.. or is just a 4 speed, with 5th as overdrive and reverse? im guessing its 6spd with reverse cause the newer tranny's are like that
and would this tranmission be adequate to handle the power of a 454 bbc?

Ok I can answer this one because I have done the swap twice. YOu will need a custom crossmember. THey are like $100 from www.spohn.net . Whether or not the T-56 will hold up depends on how wild you want to go.
It has 6 forward gears. 5th and 6th are overdrives. and has 1 reverse gear.

You should email that guy and ask him what year it is for. because the 93, 94-97 and 98-02 are all different trannies. You want a 94-97 especially if you are going BBC. The 98-02 will not fit and the 93 is weaker than the 94-97.
The T-56 can handle the horse power but there are a lot of problems reported with the T-56 setup on almost bone stock cars. Also, i just assumed you were gonna aim for closer to 600 hp, that would spell disaster for the T-56.
The T-56 will handle a lot of power if you don't beat on it too bad. It's perfect for street use, but hard launches on slicks with a racing clutch will kill it after a while. I hear about people shattering secondary shafts, but they all have 500+ hp and REAL heavy clutches.
I love my T-56 as a driving tranny, but if it was a drag-only car I'd go for fewer gears and more beef.

T-56 is Pretty DARN Tough.... I have seen them behind Big blocks....and the T-56 tranny goes behind a VIPER as well as some of those Ford Moostangs
If you are doing a street car for FUN...Hell Yes...
All Out Race Car!! No way!

I have no personal experiences with your combo but here is my opinion anyway.
The t56 should hold up to street abuse from a 454. Start cutting some very low 60' with a heavy car and lots of torque and you can call your days numbered.
Using a sprung hub clutch should help on the longevity too. Something like a Mcleod Twin disc will probably break something tranny related. Either the input or the output shaft. I am not sure which one usually goes. Just something I have read about. There are people who upgrade to Viper shafts for that reason.
