Question Starter problems

Sometimes when starting the car the starter makes a awful noise and shakes and I think I can hear sparks. And sometimes it juts clicks and wont turn over or won't even click, but if I push it just a lttle and try again it will start. Or if its making that noise I stop and try again it again it starts fin. It only doea this maybe 1/8 of the time. Was thinking mybe a combination of the starter needing to be shimmed and a bad spot on the armature of the starter. Any Ideas?

New starter or check to see if your bolts are tight

It only needs to be shimmed once. I have never shimmed a starter other than during install. If the bolts are tight, take them out and examine the gear. Rotate the crank and see if the teeth are chipped. If not, you are lucky. If so, you need a new flexplate or flywheel. I'd change the starter before you get stranded somewhere. I'd take it out and look at the gears on both starter and flexplate or flywheel.
