Starter grinding problem

Starter grinding problem=Every time i start my RS it spins real slow for like 2 seconds until it starts up. It sounds like its grinding. Ive seen this before but not with third gens. The guy i bought the car from said the starter was new and i belive it. He was straight forward with everything else and didnt lie so it shud be new. I think the guy who put it in put it too close to the flywheel and just needs a shim to fix that. Im gonna do it this weekend. Anything else it could be? Maybe im wrong about this.

While you are poking around down there, check the bolts. A lot of times the smaller diameter threaded tip will be slightly bent and the starter ends up out of alignment. Roll the body of the bolt on a flat surface and see if the tip wobbles. That was the problem on the starter in my 71 when it started to drag last summer.

Also make sure they are the correct bolts with the knurled shanks. And make sure the shanks extend slightly past the starter nose casting. The first 1/4" or so of the bolt holes is unthreaded. The shanks extend into this unthreaded part of the hole and serve to register the nose precisely, kind of like dowel pins.
