No modifications need to be made to the AIR system or ECM. The AIR system is an output only, so it won't affect anything once removed. However, you will have a problem with the serpentine belt system. You either need to fabricate an idler pulley to go in place of the removed pump, or you could relocate a few items and run a different belt.

You will also need to plug the holes in the manifolds or like you said, buy headers without the tubes.

cool but can i just run a shorter belt and i hear that some of the a.i.r systems have tubes that go in to the back of the heads. i want to keep it where i can put it back on if i have to.

Thumbs up

Yep, just run a shorter belt with the AIR pump and related pipes removed. You can also buy some pipe fittings and remove the stainless pipes that go into the manifolds if you really want to clean it up and free up some space. You can just leave the pipe that goes down to the cat in place and cap it off with a pipe cap but the ones that go behind the engine are rubber on yours IIRC, so just yank it all and throw it in a box and stash it in the shed.....

Check out the tech articles at www.thirdgen.org for more info on rerouting the belt and the proper sizes for the pipe fittings for the manifolds (1/4" NPT I think).

The Ford 302 is the only engine I know of that has the AIR tubes in the heads, and that's only on the truck motors. FYI
