Scan tool?

If 1996 and newer cars are OBDII, what are 92 TPI cars? All I see are scanners for OBDII. Does OBDII cover older cars too?

No way!

96+ --- OBII
94-95 --- OBI
TPI Cars ('90+) --- SD
TPI Cars ('90-) --- MAF

I think the scanner would be for either SD/Maf. But then again when it comes to getting a scanner, I'm clueless.

If you pick up an Auto xray. If you pick up the right one I think its the 35000 one then it will scan most cars. They cost $389.00 through a Smucks (Schucks) & Most auto supply stores.

Auto X-Ray 35000

EZ-Link OBD-l & II Pro-Pack With Cables:

Performs modes 1-7 of the J1979 OBD-II scan tool spec., including: display live sensor information while driving, freeze frame data surrounding a trouble code event, pull codes in plain English, clear codes & reset Check Engine light, access oxygen sensor tests, & an on-demand capture mode that records sensor values for up to 29 seconds to diagnose intermittent problems.
Computer safe - Will not deploy airbags, change transmission gears, or affect ABS performance, fuel or ignition systems.

Scans these vehicles: Post-1996 domestic, Asian/European OBD-II compliant, 1982-1995 GM 12 pin ALDL, 1983-1995 Ford EEC-IV, 1983-1995 Chrysler SCI, and 1991-1995 Jeeps.

Includes: EZ-Link Scanner, OBD-II cable, OBD-II manufacturer function cable, OBD-I GM, Ford, & Chrysler cables (1 each), user manual, & carrying case.

I've got a Snap-On scanner that reads cars up to 1995. I don't think that our cars self diagnosis had a specific nomencature, unless anything before OBD II is called OBD I? Any real scanner (all the major tool companies, Snap-On, Mac and Matco make/ offer them) will be able to not only read codes, but also monitor any function that the compter sees as well as offer possible causes for what is tripping the code. Some things that you can watch are engine temp, rpm, injector pulse width, a/c on or off, intake temp, MAF reading, throttle position, open/closed loop etc.

I wouldn't assume that an OBDII scanner will read our cars, it might, but check for back compatability b/f spnding any $$.

You could buy AutoXray and return it to the store for the money after you are done.

I have one of the newer one of the Auto X-rays, this is a great tool, it will scan OBD-I and OBD-II, ford, Chysler, Etc....Not to mention, when they come out with newer software, they send me a e-mail and i can go download it to keep my scanner up to date.

We have an Auto Xray here & it gets use alot. When someones car goes down we get phone calls. Its one of the 35000s I dont know what we would do with out it. Saves us alot of money with the 6 cars we have.

I can't afford a couple hundred on a scanner right now. I realy interested in the sofware and cable to hook up to my Pocket PC. I found some software programs but they all say OBDII and didn't mention anything about older cars.

Here's one I'm looking at
Scanner
