Replacement carb for 82 camaro

My buddy has a 82 camaro with 198k miles on it and it is still on the stock carburater! Well the other day it gave out. What would be the best replacement for the th old worn out 305? Oh it is a 4bbl. any help would be appreciated.

If it still is, and requires a smog check, the only viable option is to find a rebuilt E4ME. All others are not smog legal. If he plans to, and can, remove the computer controlls and smog equipment ... then any 650 CFM carb will work. Mechanical secondaries are best with a manual, and vacuum secondaries typically go great with autos.

If he removes the conputer controlled carb, he should also replace the distributor with a vacuum advance type (rather than a computer controlled one) to take full advantage of the advancing mechanism.

Me and a buddy slapped a Holley 600 Vac. Secondary/Electric choke unit on my 305. It fired right up on the first hit of the key with 6 PSI of fuel pressure. It probably cost $200 or so and I'm happy with it. It starts right up in our cold michigan climate also. Which is in the below freezing range right now. Goodluck!
