tpi on a 305?sup
tpi on a 305?sup
hey well, my frined finally decided to give me a 305 he has behind his house, well the only problem with that is it doesnt have the intake, and we dont know if its a carb or a tpi or tbi. i there anyway to tell? or can i put any intake style on it? i hear that tpi is more performance oriented, is this true or should i go with a carb? the way i wanna go with this car is make it look stock outside, but gut the interior and make it haul with the 305. now b4 you start saying "go with the 350", this is the beauty of my project. no one suspects a 305 to haull a$$.
so any advice or info that can be given will be greatly apreciated. thnx

Need to know year of engine as to what type of intake was on it, standard bolting or the newer more vertical design. Put any intake you want on it, the newer ones just cost more. I'd sure go with a carb set up at this point, Getting a complete TPI and sorting it all out would be a tough job, and the carb will perform as good, if not better, especially if you intend to modify the engine.
hey well thnx you guys for the advice, so it would be better to run a carb? maybe two jjajaj, well i will plan on running the vin in order to see wut year to buy the parts for. and would i be able to run aftermarket camaro headers on my 83 cutlass supreme, cuz thats the car the 305 is for
If it already had a TPI then it might be worth keeping and upgrading to bigger runners and throttle body. But if you don't even have the TPI manifold, runners and throttle body let alone the computer to run it then I would go carb or aftermarket Port injection. Carb is way cheaper though and in my opinion much easier to run.
A lot of people say you can run the pre-87 carb manifolds on the later model TPI motors by elongating the center holes of the manifold to fit the bolts into the heads since they are at a totally different angle than earlier models. But from looking at a set of 87 305 heads I have in my garage and trying to match a per-87 manifold intake gasket to it, it looks like there is a lip on top of the heads above the intake runners that would give the manifold issues. I plan on trying it myself with my old 305 just to see if it fits right. Just mentioning that so you some things to look out for.
Oh and about being a sleeper. That's hard to pull off since everything from a 283 to a 400 smallblock all look the same on the outside.

Now why would I say "go with a 350"??? It just so happens that Tucson has two of the fastest daily-driven, emissions-legal 305's around. Tim Burgess, moderator of the Electronics Board at thirdgen.org has put his 305 in the 11's. I'm just around the corner. I'd say we definitely own two of the top three or four in this category.
Do you know Philip Brown? He owns a pair of third gens and lives in Rio Rico too.

Edelbrock Performer Intake
Holley 600CFM Vac. Secondary carb.
100HP worth of Nitrous Oxide introduced with a Nitrous Express Stage 6 carb plate.
Lokar throttle and TV cable
Headers+y pipe
Shorty 3" exhaust with a 2 chamber flowmaster in place of the cat. converter.
Full weight convertible IROC-Z with 3.73 gears and a stock 700R4 auto trans. 13.30's @ 105 MPH. Running rich(aka: safe)
Then abuse accordingly with 150HP worth of Nitrous Oxide once you have a spare engine in the works
Goodluck! 305's, 350's, 400's..They all rule when they're force fed. All they have to do is stay together.

"never underestimate the power of a 305". When I get out of school I plan to do some more mods to mine.I will be happy getting into the 13's.Or so I think.Have a nitrous kit for my Mustang that will work on my Z
Might just have to try that.I would rather have it run quick N/A,but thats just me.Also were those 305's from above post running 11's N/A or sprayed?? Denny I know that your was sprayed. Are you going to go with the 150 shot on it now??
Will the pistons take that?? Are factory pistons cast or Hyperutectic??Thats one thing I like about the Rustang it has O.E.Forged pistons.Already sprayed a 150 in her with no major malfunctions as of yet.

If your 305 is in good shape, doesn't need rings or bearings, then it is only intelligent to make use of it. Some people have more money than brains, throwing away a perfectly good V8 just because it is 45 ci smaller than a 350. Shoot for 1 hp/ci, which is what my build up is. It'll whoop any stock L98!
