28 didn't become standard until 1990 although there may be a few 1989's with 28 during the changeover. Before that, all the 7-1/2" diffs were 26. You can easily convert to 28 spline with a 28 spline carrier and some 28 spline axles from a 90-92 third gen or some 28 spline third gen aftermarket axles.
