Rearend Locker

what are the advantages and disadvantages of a rearend locker? all it does is just locks the rearend so its full posi right? does it make funny noises when i corner or what? Also where can i get one for my stock rearend for a decent price...Also do you have to have a posi unit to install a locker?? My car is a one wheel wonder and would love to have both tires go in smoke, i was going to go with a LS1 rear becasue i am getting 4th gen wheels and i wanted disc brakes...should i go ahead and try to keep looking for a ls1 rear, or get a rearend locker???

Re: Rearend Locker

I installed 4th Gen guts into mine, a Zexel type Limited Slip Posi, worm gear driven...very effective.

Re: Rearend Locker

If I were you I'd keep looking for a 4th gen rear instead of installing the locker. Especially if the car is a daily driver.

Salvage yards. There are a couple on the internet that specialize in F-Body parts. Someone will probably chime in with their URL's.

Try doing a search on the board here for 4th gen salvage, or something along those lines. I've seen the links to the junkyards before, I just don't remember them off hand.

Re: Rearend Locker

will abs not work on my 3rd gen camaro??? i know its a pretty straight forward swap as far as brackets and everything goes, but how easily does the disc brakes hook up to the factory brake lines???I found a rearend at hawks third gen, do i just call and ask for info on it or what???or should i visit salvage yards so i save on shipping...i really don't know the availability of these rearends...

Re: Rearend Locker

It's a direct bolt-in. You simply leave the reluctor gear sensor disconnected. Your 4th-gen axles will be two inches longer though, so be prepared for it by getting some different offset wheels.

Don't get fooled into thinking the '98 up axles are any stronger than a 1989-1997 axle, because they are not. They have a different style brake caliper & rotor, is all. They are 28 spline axles, and a 7 5/8 ring gear, just like 1989 cars. In fact, I have a 1999 heavy-duty Gleason Torsen differential from a '99 Firehawk installed in my 1984 axle housing. I used 28 spline axles from Moser rather than use OEM axles. The biggest advantage to the newer axle is the better technology in the differential, and the better brakes, which should already have brake lines. You will probably be able to simply connect from your existing rear brake line to the axle brake lines with no troubles.
