Real Header Experiences or stay stock manifold

All I am being told my Chevy that the manifold for my car is on back order that sucks!

Anyone know where I can call up and get a new one? My car has 2 cats and is a 5.7 92 z28.

I was looking into the SLP Headers (http://www.lmperformance.com/c/7/7.html) that are coated (do to heat concerns) Anyone have any advise on these? How hot does it get under the hood? I also did not see an option for the headers for a dual cat camaro which I thought was really wierd.

You can use those headers for the dual cat-cars, but you'll have to fab up your Ypipe. Or you could just convert to one cat if the state allows it.

I havent used those headers, but a good freind of mine has them on his 86 TPI T/A and he likes them, his only gripe is that when he took them off when rebuilding the motor the flanges warped while setting , he had to really work with them to get them back into shape.

I would also reccomend the Edelbrock peices, send them off for coating.

Re: Real Header Experiences or stay stock manifold

3rd gen engine bays are pretty cramped and heat builds up quickly. I would recommend having coated headers on any 3rd gen, although I've run them plenty of times without any coating.

SLP makes nice stuff but it sure is pricey. I've found that Hooker makes a nice set of inexpensive 1-5/8" shortie headers for the 3rd gen that install very easily without a lot of the gyrations you have to go through to install long-tubes (and they'll still outperform stock manifolds by a lot). Of course, you'll still need a custom y-pipe to fit it up to dual cats, but that could probably be fashioned relatively easily by playing cut-n-paste with the single cat y-pipe that comes with these headers, saving you the expense of the shop having to build the header-to-y-pipe flanges. You can get these coated or uncoated and in emissions-legal (with smog tubes) on non-emissions versions.

Re: Real Header Experiences or stay stock manifold

wow crazy how screwing up on screw is going to end up costing money. I am still being told by chevy that the stock manifold is on back order.

I looked into a set of headers from edelbrock (coated) by the descrip says there is need for welding and cutting. Crazy that there is nothing that just fits in.

SLP prices are crazy I agree.

Anyone out there know any spots that might carry this manifold? Called hawks but he said they had none in stock.

I wonder now that manifold is off the car if I can just have that screw repaired...??

I would recommend the Edelbrock TES headers and dual cat Y-pipe. I have these on my '87, and they are quite easy to install. If you would like to have them coated, you can send them to a number of companies (such as Jet-Hot) and have them done. I think the average price is $50-$75 per header.

Re: Real Header Experiences or stay stock manifold

I put the TES headers on my 92 with dual cats, but I remove the dual cats and went with 3 in high flow cat. Fits good even with the headers wrapped, except I have a factory oil cooler that runs to the oil filter that make getting to one of the y-pipe bolts a real pain and the header touches the coolant pipe(not sure if thats a real bad thing).

I had the TES and didn't think much of them. Switched to the SLP 1 3/4 ones that were not coated and they did not warp or whatever. Would have reused them but they wouldn't fit the Vette. Also I switched to the single cat style and ran a high flow cat in it.

Re: Real Header Experiences or stay stock manifold

i have the hooker 2055's with "Y" pipe and are coated as well. i love them as they fit better than any header iv ever ran on any of my cars. they clearance well . i would suggues using anothert header bolt other than the stock bolts that come with as some of the bolts are a bit rough to get a wrench on being the pipes are so close.
i have heard great things about breslins.

I have the Hooker 2055s, too. They're OK. I'd seriously check out the MAC headers if you can find them for a good price from a place that has them in stock, but dont ever get them on backorder. I waited 3 months and they never came in. They're a great piece though, nicer than my Hookers.

Re: Real Header Experiences or stay stock manifold

I have the SLP's 1 3/4 and love them.Wasn't too impressed with the Edelbrock's.Don't like the way the pipes are smashed where they go to the collecter.Never used the Hookers but there comparable to the SLP's and love there regular Comp. ones other than the fact they don't come with a Y pipe.By the way,I've got a set of manifolds off an 89 Iroc that was 350TPI dual cat. car, there just like what you've got now.You can have them if you'll pay shipping.

Re: Real Header Experiences or stay stock manifold

Hey everyone well the z is still at the dealer. I just got laid off on friday so I dont think I will be able to afford the headers sucks!

In reply the screw that broke on the manifold is one of the 2 that connect it to the Y pipe. Sucker snapped in half. My friend who works for the dealer heated it up like crazy to get it off but was unable to get it off.

I wonder if I can maybe take it to a machine shop or some shop and have a new one put in. Anyone think thats possible? what kind of shop could handle that? I assume they would have to drill it out and put a new one in.

I am hoping transambill still has the manifold

Re: Real Header Experiences or stay stock manifold

Dude, get a cobalt drill bit and drill a hole through the old stud/manifold. Use a nut and a bolt. Good enough. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt! OK, no shirt, but the rest is true!!!
