Post Please help, car will not run.

OK it's an 88 305 tbi firebird. The entire distributor is new. The coil is good. the map sensor, temperature sensors, iac valve , are new. Fuel filter is new. The alternator is new. The egr has been blocked off and vacuume lines plugged.

Problem is it does not want to stay running, when i go to start it it will rev up and down until it finally shuts off unless if give it fuel, which it will then try stay running. I have noticed that when the engine dies the injectors are still putting fuel to the engine. So i suspect that it is ignition related. But the basic stuff is all new.

Take some carburator cleaner and spray it down the throttle body and see if it stays running. It sounds to me like the fuel pump is dead. Just because the injectors spray, doesn't mean there is adequate fuel. Checking fuel pressure on these cars is a PITA because there is not service port. You have to by an inline adapter, just to hook a gauge up to. Stock pressure is usually between 9-13 PSI. Cars that have less than that run like you describe.

Uhm am i supposed to be able to hear the fuel pump running with the ignition turned? Not starting it but just turned to the 'run' position? Cause if it's supposed to it's not running. Althought the car will start and stall out.

I replaced the fuel pump relay and no go.

Sometimes you can hear them, sometimes not. If it didn't work at all (not running) it wouldn't even start and stall. It would just plain not start. It sounds to me like the pump runs, just doesn't put out enough volume to keep the car running.

Thanks for the help. It's looking like the pump now. Checked spark...it's nice and bright at the plugs. I guess the pump is barely working. I'll be taking it to a mechanic. I really don't feel like doing this job myself. I know it's not hard but it's time consuming and a pain. It's easier for me to just pay to have it done.
